Our Company is seeking a summer intern to work with the data scientists, organic and analytical chemists, and chemical engineers in the Data Rich-Experimentation (DRE) group to solve key challenges in integrating data streams from a diverse range of analytical instrumentation. The successful applicant will design and implement a pipeline for parsing raw data from HPLC and SFC instruments with UV, MS, and other detectors and create a web-based front-end for end-user processing. This individual will have a unique opportunity to learn skills at the interface of data science, analytical chemistry, and organic synthesis and develop tools and infrastructure that will have significant impacts across our organization.

Day-to-day research will focus on writing code, deploying the data pipeline, and generating chemically meaningful visualizations. There will be considerable flexibility in work arrangements. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on site with our team members in Rahway, NJ or Boston, MA, or remotely, with regular contact and mentorship through our telepresence platforms.

The successful candidate must display a high level of innovation, creativity, and initiative and have excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills. Interns in the Small Molecule Process Research and Development organization function as fully-integrated members of their respective teams and participate in regular departmental- and team-level meetings. In addition to the discovery and development of synthetic routes to potential drug candidates, our department is engaged in bio- and chemo catalysis screening and development, laboratory automation, preparative-scale chromatography, and analytical research. Overall, interns are exposed to broad perspectives on the drug development process in the pharmaceutical industry.

Required Education & Experience:

  • Candidates must be a currently enrolled sophomore, junior, or senior student pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in computer science, chemistry, or a related field; OR a currently enrolled graduate student pursuing a Master’s degree or Ph.D. in the same fields.

  • Candidates must have completed at least two years of studies toward a bachelor’s degree by June 2022.

Preferred Experience & Skills:

  • Candidates should have an interest in organic chemistry, analytical instrumentation, data science, and machine learning

  • Candidates should be proficiency in Python and related data science/visualization libraries (numpy, pandas, and Plotly Dash)

  • Candidates should have experience with binary data file formats and hex editors

  • Candidates should have familiarity with version control (git), scripting, basic web hosting

  • Candidates should have basic understanding of the principles of chromatography, analyte detection, and quantitation
