Job Summary:

Akima Infrastructure Services, LLC (AIS), is actively seeking candidates to support personnel as part of our staff augmentation team supporting the Department of Energy in Upton, NY. Successful candidates will be employees of AIS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance customer's core mission. Though employed by AIS, the employee will take day-to-day direction and assignments from customer staff and procedures. Pay, benefits, Human Resources, and Employment Management functions are provided by AIS.

Qualified applicants must be a US citizen, at least 18 years of age, and able to meet pre-employment requirements including any required physicals, drug screen, and/or background investigation to satisfy clearance requirements from the Department of Energy.

Job Location: On-Site, Brookhaven National Laboratory (with potential for telework throughout assignment).

Job Responsibilities:

The EIC Infrastructure Division is seeking electrical engineering support from individuals with specific capabilities in the area of electrical distribution.

  • Perform technical reviews and serve as an owner representative of the designs developed by an independent Architect-Engineer firm in one of three electrical areas of concentration.
  • Tasks will include reviewing design drawings, wiring diagrams, feeder sizing, voltage drop and short circuit calculations, coordination of overcurrent protection and incident energy calculations.
  1. Main substation – 69kV to 13.8kV substation includes 69kV structure, 20/30MVA – 69kV to 13.8kV transformer, 13.8kV switchgear, station house power, underground distribution, lighting, lightning protection, surge protection.
  2. 13.8kV distribution and 480V Unit Substations – includes overhead distribution from main substation to various new buildings. Taps to Unit Substation include 13.8kV switches, 13.8kV breaker, 13.8kV to 480V transformers and 480Vswitchgear that will feed power to new buildings.
  3. Building distribution – includes the 480V and 208/120 distribution within the buildings. Grounding and lightning protection systems, circuit breaker selection and standby generators.
  • Attend and actively participate in design review meetings. Prepare, and submit comment sheets on the engineering deliverables and communicate stakeholder concerns and opportunities for improvement.
  • Provide continuous or intermittent oversight of office and in-field architect-engineering firm activities; provide coaching and mentoring on Brookhaven National Laboratory design requirements and expectations.
  • Conduct field walkdowns to validate existing conditions; collect and document design inputs from project stakeholders.
  • Provide input on responses to Request for Information (RFI’s) between the architect-engineering firm and the Lab.
  • Participate in assigned value engineering processes utilizing individual observation, experience, and knowledge to evaluate the project's design documents.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

The minimum requirement for assigned personnel is described below.

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline or closely related field of study.
  • Professional Engineer License or a master’s degree in a technical field.
  • Minimum seven (7) years progressively responsible related work experience that demonstrates a sound knowledge of current principles and practices in a specialized field of engineering.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of customers at all levels.
  • Effective analytical, problem solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Knowledgeable and proficient at applying engineering theories and principles.
  • Skilled in the practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations.
  • Engineering experience in the areas of medium voltage electrical distribution, circuit coordination, protective relaying, circuit interrupting equipment, overhead transmission and transformers.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact and collaborate in an international, multi-cultural and diverse scientific, engineering and technology community.

Pay and Benefits.

  • $130,000 – $160,000 – The salary offered to the successful candidate will be determined based on the candidate’s qualifications, work experience, and their ability to meet the known requirements of the position as determined at the time of hire. Job location will also be a factor in determining the salary offered.

  • Paid Time Off (PTO) is offered to regular full-time and part-time employees.

Posted Salary Range

$130,000 – $160,000
