Job Description:
The Defense Health Operation of Leidos is currently looking for a Research Electrical Engineer III to support biomedical research at the Naval Medical Research Unit, San Antonio (NAMRU-SA) in San Antonio, TX. NAMRU-SA conducts gap driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of Department of Defense personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations.
Primary Responsibilities
The ideal candidate shall:
Design prototype, maintain, and improve electrical, firmware, and software components of experimental devices to support medical research, including the development and implementation of custom firmware and software on microprocessors, integration of various sensors and optical equipment, and the development of user interfaces
Work with team members to tailor electrical and software solutions to project requirements
Work with team members to integrate electrical solutions into new and existing hardware and custom enclosures
Act as a subject matter expert (SME) in electrical design and technical requirements of current and future projects when communicating with team members and collaborators and executing project tasks
Train team members and collaborators on the use of developed devices
Establish comprehensive SOPs for equipment use
Develop comprehensive technical plans for potential projects and produce write-ups for research proposals, specifying expected material needs and estimated costs
Collect and evaluate data sets, develop presentation materials, contribute to technical reports, and present findings at technical and professional meetings
Work is to be primarily performed on a government installation. The normal work week is Monday through Friday 0800 to 1630.
Some offsite travel (~10%) may be required for data collection efforts, presentations, etc.
Basic Qualifications
The candidate will be required to acquire, at a minimum, a SECRET classification access level. Preference will be given to a candidate who already has this clearance level.
Due to Federal contract requirements, US citizenship is required.
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited university with 5+ years experience designing and prototyping electronic systems in industry
Embedded systems design experience and communication protocol familiarity (SPI, CAN, USAT, Ethernet, etc.)
Proficient in the use of oscilloscopes, power supplies, function generators, and other diagnostic equipment to develop and test circuits
Experience in microcontroller, C and assembly software development
Expert in the use of Altium, Eagle, LTSpice or equivalent software to develop electrical schematics
Experience in schematic layout and in-house PCB prototyping
Ability to work independently and as part of an engineering team
Strong analytical skills and ability to collaborate with a team of engineers and scientists; excellent written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
Masters or Doctoral Degree in electrical engineering preferred
Experience in the medical device industry desired
Experience in developing machine learning algorithms, implementing artificial intelligence solutions, and neural networks desired
Experience in technical report writing
