The Protein Purification group at our company's Research Laboratories located in South San Francisco is looking for a co-op who will work collaboratively in a team environment to help increase our throughput by setting up liquid handler(s) for purifying, performing reduction, oxidation, and conjugation reactions on biologics.

The successful candidate will have a working understanding of protein purification and characterization techniques with strong academic performance, and communication skills. The candidate is expected to work effectively within the purification team, to be able to follow standard purification procedures, maintain detailed records, and assist in the preparation and uploading of purification and characterization reports to the database. The co-op will participate in departmental and project team meetings to gain broader perspective on the drug discovery process in the pharmaceutical industry. In addition, the co-op will have an opportunity to present their results. During your co-op, you will work closely with senior scientist(s) to:

  • Program a TECAN liquid handler to optimize high throughput purification, reduction, and oxidation of antibodies.
  • Perform various biochemical techniques to characterize the molecules and determine if the reaction was successful.
  • Develop an alternative method using magnetic beads for handling larger volumes.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Candidate must be a currently enrolled undergraduate junior or senior student pursuing a Bachelor’s degree or a currently enrolled graduate student pursuing a Maters or PhD in Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry, or Pharmaceutical Sciences.
  • Candidates must be available to work full-time for up to (6) months.

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Candidate should have basic laboratory skills in biochemistry, and experience with basic biochemistry techniques such as buffer preparation, SDS-PAGE analysis, protein purification.
  • Experience with HPLC, lab automation, and programming is a plus.
  • Candidate should have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
