The Future Talent Program features Cooperative (Co-op) education that lasts up to 6 months and will include one or more projects. General Overview:

Applications are sought for a scientific co-op/intern opportunity in Vaccine Process Research and Development within our Research Laboratories. The candidate will work within Vaccine Process Development to evaluate continuous product harvest for a vaccine candidate produced in cell culture.  The co-op will support implementation of an automated membrane harvest system to facilitate continuous harvest over multiple days, participate in bioreactor execution, and evaluate of product quality over a multi-day harvest window.   

Specific Job Requirements:

Candidate is expected to consider input from the Vaccine Process and Development department as well as the Continuous Manufacturing group in Process Research and Development to evaluate viability of continuous harvest for the vaccine candidate.  Under direction of the project mentor, the individual will implement a continuous harvest membrane system with the appropriate automation and safety controls.  The candidate will participate in bioreactor runs along with the Vaccine Process Development laboratory team.  The candidate will conduct evaluation of product quality using a simplified purification scheme.

The candidate is expected to function in a multi-disciplinary collaborative environment. They will be expected to demonstrate the ability to communicate results of their work in both verbal and written formats.  In addition to the core responsibilities outlined above, the candidate will be expected to keep careful notes, comply with all required training, and maintain a focused attention on laboratory safety for themselves and their team.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Candidates must be enrolled in a minimum of a BS/BA in: Chemical/Bio Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Life Sciences, or relevant discipline.

  • Candidates must be available to work full-time for up to 6 months.

  • Candidates must be enrolled in a co-op program at their college / university.

  • Candidates must be highly motivated and driven. Willing to take initiative to learn new science and excited to implement new technologies.

  • Candidates must be a strong team player. Candidate should be able to balance the needs of multiple disciplines when implementing new technologies.

  • Candidates must be comfortable using a PC computer and proficient in Windows-based operating systems and basic applications, such as spreadsheets and databases, at a minimum.

  • Candidates must have excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Candidates must have good critical thinking skills.

  • Candidates must have basic laboratory skills such as pipetting.

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Candidates should have experience with aseptic handling techniques to support cell culture

  • Candidates should have experience with handling of biological compounds (e.g. Biosafety Level 2)

  • Candidates should have experience working with membrane operations such as tangential flow filtration

  • Candidates should have experience with analytical methods including SDS-PAGE, Western blot, ELISA

  • Candidates should have current GPA of 3.0 or higher
