Job Description:

The Health and Behavioral Sciences Department at the Naval Health Research Center in San Diego, CA has an immediate opening for a full-time Data Analyst/Research Scientist 2 to support an on-going project that involves working with a large, complex longitudinal military population database. This position will provide research and analytic expertise for a project that will modernize the existing U.S. Navy Search and Rescue (SAR) database and examine gaps in en route care (ERC). The successful candidate will work closely and collaboratively with the Principal Investigator, analysts, and subject matter experts to build, maintain, and analyze a large longitudinal database to explore potential gaps in existing maritime ERC. The candidate must be prepared to work independently to complete discrete tasks, with minimal supervision, but should also be comfortable working as part of a larger research team. The successful applicant will have demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills to successfully interact with a variety of people. The ideal candidate will possess strong verbal, written, and analytical skills; be organized and detail-orientated; demonstrate project management skills, including the ability to determine appropriate priorities and complete projects accurately, on-time, and within budget; able to take initiative, and work well independently and as part of a team.

Due the COVID-19 pandemic, employees are highly encouraged to work remotely from their home office, although occasional visits to the Naval Health Research Center in San Diego will be required. Longer term, this position will be required to be on-site at the Naval Health Research Center a minimum of 2 days a week.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Participates in all aspects of the research process including survey design, data collection and management, and data analysis and interpretation.

  • Provides research and analytic support for study design, implementation, and analyses of deployment health research projects, with a focus on chronic disease, environmental, and/or occupational epidemiology.

  • Develops protocols and proposals including conducting literature reviews and writing of the scientific background, study methodology, and data analyses. Additionally, writes the interpretation of data findings in the context of ongoing research objectives and publishes findings.

  • Develops algorithms and writes programs to clean, merge, and update variables/datasets from large epidemiologic studies. Runs programs to create final datasets for this large study program ensuring accuracy. Familiarity working with medical record data strongly preferred.

  • Performs and helps interpret statistical analyses using SAS, SPSS, R and/or STATA including data manipulations, weighting techniques, logistic regression, general linear models with repeated measures, survival analyses, and other statistical techniques for longitudinal and missing data.

  • Writes reports and scientific manuscripts for peer-reviewed professional journals.

  • Delivers presentations to the Department and at various national and international scientific and military conferences.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in statistics or relevant social science field (e.g., epidemiology, public health, psychology) with heavy quant focus and at least 4 years of significant research experience with large, complex medical records datasets

  • Experience using applied statistics in a professional research capacity using large, complex longitudinal datasets

  • Demonstrated expertise in SAS, SPSS, R, STATA, or other statistical packages

  • Demonstrated expertise with data manipulation, data analysis (including linear and logistic regression, hazard models, data visualization

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated familiarity with the Military Health System Data Repository and/or other large complex military databases

  • Demonstrated experience preparing military research documents, including military data-sharing agreements and IRB protocols

  • Demonstrated experience with natural language processing and machine learning

  • Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and write complex documents such as project reports, technical reports, and manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication

Due to federal contract restrictions, candidate must be a U.S. citizen and able to obtain a Secret Clearance.
