The Chemist conducts research for new products, performs continuous development of existing products, and creates associated testing methodology. Occasionally helps with analytical testing or other QC activities as requested. Works under direction and guidance of R&D Chemist.

Essential Functions

  • Testing of industrial lubricants, raw materials, detergents, and other products.
  • Set up laboratory equipment, ensuring proper calibration for sample testing.
  • Collect, test, and analyze samples in support of QC, R&D, and Technical Services.
  • Blending and testing of experimental formulas.
  • Prepare chemical solutions for use in processing materials following standardized formulas and experimental procedures.
  • Document and analyze test results, then compile data to report to department heads.
  • Identify and solve problems accurately within a work environment with pressing deadlines.
  • Conducts basic and complex analyses of raw material and production samples using approved analytical methods and techniques.
  • Investigates and makes recommendations with respect to the cause and resolution of equipment and instrument issues or malfunctions.
  • Conducts investigation of out-of-specification and out-of-trend test results.
  • Critically reviews own work, and may review the work of other Laboratory staff, for accuracy and completeness.
  • Additional duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry required.
  • 3-5 years laboratory experience required.
  • Proficient with MS Office suite.
  • Thorough understanding of the Scientific Method and excellent independent research skills are required.
  • Clear written and oral communications required.
  • Must be motivated, dependable, and able to complete tasks in a timely manner both independently and as part of the laboratory team.
Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is moderate.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk to and talk to people throughout the manufacturing plant; reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, and/or couch. Occasional lifting of up to 35 pounds is required.

Other Duties
To familiarize this position with LE’s lab equipment and product knowledge, this position will start in the QC lab for training and experience before moving into the R&D lab. Time frame in the QC lab could be several months, depending on individual skillset.
