Senior Manager UX Testing & Research


What Will You Do?

The Senior (Sr.) Manager User Testing & Research leads the identification and execution of website improvements that will optimize the user experience (UX) and in turn, will increase user satisfaction, sales, revenue, conversion, and will improve the overall usability of Ashley consumer facing applications. The general process involves designing, developing and conducting A/B – multi-variate tests, usability tests, competitive research & analysis, focus groups, taxonomy studies, surveys, contextual user interviews, analyzing heat map data, analytics data, session recordings, eye tracking, etc. The Sr. Manager User Testing & Research will be instrumental in leading a team of UX Research Analysts, UX Test Engineers, and this team will make recommendations for website optimization based on data driven insights. In addition, the Sr. Manager User Testing & Research will lead the WCAG2.0, ADA 508 Compliance program for Ashley. This is critical to ensuring we are meeting the needs of our consumers with disabilities that fall under the scope of WCAG2.0 and ADA 508 Compliance. The Sr. Manager of User Testing & Research will manage the day to day operations of the testing team including UX Research Analysts and UX Testing Engineers.

  • Lead and direct internal design, merchandising, marketing, content and software teams to ensure that the need for testing and research is understood and the proper type of testing and research is chosen to meet the need, request, or situation.
  • Develop, mentor, direct and lead UX Testing & Research staff and embody the need to be continuously evolving and improving our existing testing and research protocols.
  • Investigate new methodologies and ensure that the most up-to-date and relevant industry and international standards are being tested for.
  • Apply expert understanding of our customer base in multiple markets around the world.
  • Design studies that address both user behavior and attitudes.
  • Conduct research using a wide variety of qualitative and quantitative methods and interpret analysis through the lens of UX, Human Computer Interation (HCI), and social science. Including but not limited to: AB tests, user/usability tests, taxonomy studies, surveys, contextual interviews, focus groups, heat maps, session recordings, eye tracking, etc.
  • Work cross-functionally with our customer service, business Intelligence, marketing, merchandising, content, etc., to better understand our global customer base and communicate this information to our UX team to help better inform the end product and to insure we are following a data driven / user centered approach for any and all design work.
  • Generate insights that both fuel ideation and evaluate designs.
  • Design, develop and conduct A/B testing. Determine testing goals and parameters based on desgins, trends, analytics and functionality; design and run experiments to test website current state and variations in terms of traffic allocation, audience and URL targeting; design and develop code changes needed for test variation; analyze test results and make recommendations for change based on data driven insights.
  • Review research analysis and data from tests/studies and disseminate to the team and wider audience at Ashley.
  • Design, develop and conduct user tests. Participate in determining test goals, authoring test scripts and recruiting test participants based on user persona’s as well as other parameters as required. Work closely with UX to identify research topics and define studies to address user behavior and attitude. Assist with creating prototype based designs as needed. Assist with and conduct user interviews as well as moderated and unmoderated studies. User test applications to champion refinements of the product until the usability and experience reach desired expectations. Synthesize and communicate research findings to inform business decisions that drive further refinements and iterations needed in order to build greater empathy and a better user experience for our consumers.
  • Partner with all cross-functional departments within Ashley to create and share research.
  • 1Adapt and lead research practices to meet team needs under tight deadlines of a rapidly growing business.
  • Synthesize and communicate research findings to inform business decisions, design decisions and to build an even greater empathy for our customers.
  • Manage WCAG2.0, ADA Section 508 compliance. Manage vendor relationship for accessibility software / platform contracts. Determines necessary software / platforms required to scan code in order to discover accessibility issues. Discern accessibility issues from design and code. Ensure Ashley has an adopted accessibility program that maintains accessibility patterns and best practices. Ensure that Ashley is always moving towards accessibility compliance and improvements as much as possible so that we can meet the needs of our consumers that have impairments.
  • Make employment decisions and/or recommendations on hiring, improvement plans, transfers, promotions, corrective actions, terminations, pay adjustments, etc.
  • Coordinate and manage the work of employees by directing members of the team to meet the area’s goals. Audit regularly to ensure standard operating procedures are being adhered to.
  • Manage employee performance and assist employees in making improvements to their performance through coaching, mentoring and administering performance reviews. Recommend, plan and/or implement employee training and skill development activities.
  • Audit, maintain and ensure employee time-keeping and absentee records are accurate.
  • Communicate company and departmental issues and goals and facilitate employee growth and development through weekly team meetings, regular individual employee meetings, coaching, training, and company-offered learning opportunities.
  • Manage resources to optimize equipment, facilities, employees, methods and materials.
  • Demonstrate the Company’s Core and Growth Values in the performance of all job functions.


What Do You Need?

  • 8 years’ experience working in ecommerce or similar B2C capacity, preferably for a multichannel retailer, Required
  • Bachelor Degree in Human Computer Interaction, Human Factors Engineering, Cognitive Science, Psychology, User Experience or equivilant work related experience.
  • Knowledge of web or mobile UI/UX in an agile environment
  • Familiarity with UI/UX design,
  • Expert with A/B and multivariate testing, user testing, competitive research, data analysis, etc.
  • Expert conducting research using a wide variety of qualitative and quantitative research methods, and interpret analysis through the lens of UX, HCI, and social science.
  • Broad knowledge of accessibility barriers as wells as the tools and techniques for overcoming them.
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards: WCAG2.0, ADA Section 508, 21 Century Video and Communications Act.
  • Knowledge of accessibility on various platforms including Windows and MacOS
  • Knowledge of Mobile accessibility on various platforms including iOS and Android.
  • Knowledge of core web technologies: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Familiarity with modern web application development practice and popular JavaScript frameworks. Familiarity with web accessibility standards (WCAG, WAI-ARIA) • Deep knowledge of cross-platform and browser compatibility issues
  • Experience with web accessibility API’s
  • Experience with screen readers and other assistive devices for digital interfaces.
