Senior Scientist, Materials Science
Job Description

The Materials & Biophysical Characterization (MBC) group within Analytical Research & Development is seeking a highly motivated and technically focused individual interested in positively impacting our Company's pipeline from discovery through development and commercial launch.
Key Responsibilities
Responsible for the physicochemical characterization of pharmaceutical materials including small molecule active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), chemical intermediates, peptides, novel excipients, drug-product intermediates, and drug products
Build technical expertise in characterization, participate on cross-functional technical teams and interdepartmental initiatives
Utilize their expertise in physical organic chemistry or materials science to tackle scientific challenges related to crystallization, polymorph and salt-selection, milling, drug-excipient compatibility, enhancing bio-performance with enabled formulation strategies, and physical stability of small molecules
Build a strong network internally and across the external academic and regulatory community
Contribute to a culture of scientific excellence, develop a compliance mindset (including GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) principles), and collaborate with partners and stakeholders across the Merck network such as Discovery Chemistry, Process & Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Formulations Sciences
Education
- Bachelor or Master degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences or related discipline, with a minimum of five years relevant industrial experience
or
- PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences or related discipline with 0-3 years of experience. *Recent PhD Candidates must be graduating by the end of September 2022

Required
Expertise in materials science or physical chemistry with experience in materials characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, electron microscopy, IR and Raman spectroscopy, particle size analysis and powder property characterization
Strong academic record including publications in peer reviewed journals and presentations at scientific meetings
Self-motivated, creative and energetic scientist willing to continually learn and solve complex problems
Principled written and verbal communications
Preferred
Experience in an expansive range of solid form/ polymorph/ salt/ co-crystal screening activities on API, synthetic intermediates and starting materials, with the ability to assess and determine the most suitable form for development
Amorphous solid dispersion characterization
GMP Method development, testing and transfer
Rheological characterization of complex fluids
