The Defense Group at Leidos currently has an opening for a Research Scientist located in Aberdeen, MD. This is an excellent opportunity to use your experience and expertise to assist the Combat Capabilities Development Command-Chemical Biological Center (DEVCOM CBC) - Protection and Decontamination Division in basic and applied research efforts for the development, test, and evaluation of novel filter media and new decontamination products. The candidate will support development, test and evaluation of novel materials, equipment, and method applications for chemical and biological protection of the U.S. warfighter.
Primary Responsibilities:
Function as a team member with other engineers, chemist and scientists in synthesizing and testing novel materials such as metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and new polymers.
Development of catalytic materials for individual and collective protection against chemical warfare agents and other toxic industrial chemicals.
Operates and maintains analytical test equipment to include, but not limited to, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), X-ray Diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.
Supports frequency response techniques to measure mass transfer resistances.
Performs work in accordance published processes and procedures, ensuring safety
Generates test data and contributes to technical report development for various scientific technical information (STI).
Assists customer in research proposal writing to secure future project funding.
Prepares presentations, posters, and technical briefs for various technical communities.
Performs other duties assigned.
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related technical field with 6 or more years of relevant experience
Must be US Citizen and have ability to obtain DoD “Secret Clearance” upon hire
Proven experience in metal organic framework (MOF) development and testing, polymer development and characterization, and operating and maintaining analytical equipment (E.g., NMR, XRF, and XPS)
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in analyzing and reporting analytical data
Ability to work independently with minimal oversight
Ability to wear laboratory personal protective equipment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related technical field with 2 or more years of applicable experience
Experience in applying research methodologies for developing innovative materials
Published reports related to development and testing of sorbent materials
Experience in working with chemical warfare agents, toxic industrial materials/chemicals
Strong communication and writing skills
Proven abilities in proposal and grant writing.
Pay Range:
Pay Range $74,750.00 - $115,000.00 - $155,250.00The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
