Nonclinical Research and Development (NCRD) is an integrated function with responsibility for characterizing nonclinical safety and disposition characteristics of the entire BMS Research and Development pipeline programs, with critical role from early discovery to submission of marketing authorization applications. We utilize our deep expertise in toxicology/pathology, ADME, PK/PD, biopharmaceutics and Bioanalytics in all modalities (small and large molecules, cellular therapies and other novel modalities) to collaborate with peer R&D functions to identify and solve issues, discover high quality drug candidates, enable their clinical development and successful marketing authorizations across the globe.

Job Profile:

We are seeking a highly enthusiastic, self-motivated, exceptional scientist to join the bioanalytical research group in drug discovery that is part of the Pharmaceutical Candidate Optimization (PCO) department in Lawrenceville, NJ. PCO encompasses broad scientific expertise in DMPK, toxicology, pharmaceutics, and focuses on advancing new targets in drug discovery. The successful candidate will work within a team of bioanalytical scientists that collaborate across the PCO disciplines in collaboration with discovery biology and chemistry. The candidate is expected to have an in-depth understanding of qualitative and quantitative approaches using chromatography and high-resolution mass spectrometry with advanced data interpretation skills. This position will have responsibilities for defining and executing bioanalytical strategies best suited for quantitation of small molecule drugs and endogenous small molecules. Additionally, the successful candidate will be directly involved in designing and executing metabolomics profiling studies in support of Drug Discovery and Development efforts.

Job Responsibilities:

The successful applicant will be primarily responsible for the following:

  • Plan and execute metabolomics studies for biomarker discovery, model characterization, etc. in support of Drug Discovery and Development. Utilize and further develop the in-house generated metabolomics platform, which includes a custom-developed and supported data processing software.

  • Serve as a point of contact for future metabolomics studies including outsourcing efforts.

  • Assay-development and quantification of small molecule drugs and endogenous small molecules from biological samples (plasma/serum, tissue homogenates, DBS, etc.) using LC-MS/MS and HRMS.

  • Expert operation of Triple Quad mass spectrometers (Waters, Thermo, Sciex) and high-resolution instruments (Thermo QEs). Data processing, data interpretation and reporting.

  • Collaborate in a multidisciplinary research environment to address bioanalytical issues related to discovery programs and provide input into bioanalytical strategies.

  • Represent the department on project teams and present data at internal department and/or other company meetings, as well as external conferences.

  • Maintain good laboratory practices and documentation (Electronic Lab Notebook).

Principal Scientist

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or M.Sc. degree in analytical chemistry, biochemistry or related discipline with at least 10 years of relevant experience, with emphasis on metabolomics and/or quantitative mass spectrometry for the Principal Scientist Level or at least 5 years of relevant experience with emphasis on metabolomics and/or quantitative mass spectrometry for the Senior Scientist Level.

  • Previous experience with metabolomics.

  • Hands-on experience with different sample preparation procedures such as protein precipitation, liquid-liquid extraction, solid-phase extraction, etc.

  • Hands-on experience with Triple Quad mass spectrometers (Waters, Thermo, Sciex) and High-Resolution mass spectrometers (Thermo QEs).

  • Ability to independently diagnose and solve complex technical and scientific problems.

  • Ability to troubleshoot and perform minor instrument repairs to maintain highest performance and minimize downtime.

  • Self-motivated with excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills. Able to effectively manage and interface with others in a matrix team environment.
