Position: Scientist – Biochemistry/Biophysics

The Immunology, Cardiovascular, Fibrosis, and Global Health (ICFG) Thematic Research Center (TRC) at BMS is one of the fundamental Research and Early Development (R&ED) units delivering therapeutics to patients. Our mission is to create transformative medicines of tomorrow based on the cutting-edge science of today. We leverage BMS’s internal invention of engine that includes industry-leading expertise in small molecule chemistry, protein biotherapeutics, cell therapy, protein degradation, nucleic acids, and other therapeutic modalities. We work closely our R&ED colleagues in clinical and non-clinical development, project leadership, translational medicine, and informatics to advance therapies based on a deep understand of causal human biology. Further, we collaborate across the biopharmaceutical ecosystem to establish partnerships that complement our internal expertise.

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced, knowledgeable, and self-motivated Scientist to join our biology team within the company’s research division. Key accountabilities in this position include development of novel biochemical and biophysical assays that enable a mechanistic understanding of small molecule modulators, as well as providing experimental support and direction for existing development strategies. This position would entail ~70% laboratory presence with the rest of the time spent in other activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Characterize small molecule modulators using biochemical and biophysical assays to support hit-lead, lead-op, MOA, and translational efforts.

  • Develop and implement novel biochemical and biophysical assays to investigate how potential therapeutic agents modulate the targeted protein function.

  • Responsible for protein purification of needed reagents.

  • Plan and perform critical-path experiments in a manner consistent with the timelines and objectives of various therapeutic program teams.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams in Research to provide timely and actionable study results.

  • Communicate results efficiently to the project teams.

  • Maintain a detailed and well-organized record of experiments

Qualifications & Experience

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Biochemistry or Biophysics

or

  • Master with 3+ years industry experience

or

  • Bachelor with 5+ years industry experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Direct experience in executing biochemical/biophysical assays for small molecule drug discovery to support hit identification, hit-to-lead, and lead optimization activities.

  • Hands-on experience with biophysical methods such as SPR, DSF and ITC and biochemical methods such as stopped-flow kinetics.

  • Protein chemistry technical skills including recombinant protein expression and purification, labelling, and characterization; native tissue protein purification desired

  • Steady-state and transient kinetics experience

  • Basic knowledge of biological data analysis tools (i.e., GraphPad Prism)

  • Strong problem-solving skills, ability to develop new techniques and methodologies.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.

  • Must be self-motivated, detail-oriented, collaborative, and able to work effectively in a multidisciplinary environment.

  • Good communication and presentation skills.

The starting compensation for this job is a range from $97,000 - $123,000, plus incentive cash and stock opportunities (based on eligibility). The starting pay takes into account characteristics of the job, such as required skills and where the job is performed. Final, individual compensation is decided based on demonstrated experience.
