The Tumor Microenvironment Thematic Research Center (TME TRC) is focused on developing therapeutic targets at the intersection of tumor, stromal and immune biology within the TME with the goal of enhancing responsiveness to checkpoint blockade and targeted therapies and transforming response and durability rates for cancer patients. Comprising of scientists across multiple disciplines we are responsible for the biology and translational science necessary to support drug development from target identification through to first in human studies.

Position Summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated Sr. Associate Scientist level candidate with experience designing and running in vitro studies to evaluate pathway biology in cancer cells, fibroblasts, or endothelial cells. The individual would contribute to the discovery and validation of cancer therapeutics as part of the Stromal Biology team within the TME TRC (Redwood City, CA). The individual will be the primary lead for in vitro studies that drive early drug discovery programs across both large and small molecules from target identification through target validation and lead optimization and, ultimately, toward clinical proof of concept in patients. The individual will be part of a multidisciplinary core team that includes chemistry, bioinformatics, biotherapeutics and translational colleagues that work collaboratively to advance molecules and build a deeper understanding of the role for stromal/vascular biology in the TME. The qualified candidate will bring an enthusiasm for developing new therapies and an ability to identify, optimize, and run key in vitro assays to understand stromal cell functions and evaluate pathways that impact critical cell functions.

Position Responsibilities:

In the role as a Senior Associate Scientist within the TME TRC I-O Discovery Biology – Stromal Biology team, the ideal candidate:

  • Serves as a biology lead on targets that impact stromal biology

  • Reads literature to identify targets of interest and assays that model stromal activities in the TME

  • Designs and executes preclinical datasets from in vitro systems and treated tumor samples to support drug discovery

  • Contributes to exploratory target identification and validation of novel targets

Experience =

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 4+ years of academic and/or industry experience


  • Master’s Degree with 2+ years of academic and/or industry experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in cellular and biochemical assays. Direct experience in modeling fibroblast or endothelial cell biology in vitro is a plus.

  • Background in biologics and/or small molecule therapies is desirable.

  • Experience with primary cell cultures, multi-well assays, and standard biochemical and cellular assays is highly desirable.
