The Immunology and Cardiovascular Thematic Research Center (TRC) at BMS is one of the fundamental Research and Early Development (R&ED) units delivering therapeutics to patients. Position Summary

BMS seeks a highly motivated, creative and collaborative Cardiovascular Disease Biologist with a focus on molecular disease mechanisms and tissue specific delivery to support research efforts to identify and characterize novel therapeutic targets, support mechanism-based drug development and develop platforms to specifically target novel therapies and modalities to the heart for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.

The successful candidate will work collaboratively with teams within CV Discovery in Brisbane, CA to support BMS’s Cardiovascular Research and Early Discovery efforts. The applicant is required to have a strong background in the molecular pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases, adverse cardiac tissue remodeling, and oligonucleotide technologies. Knowledge of and experience with the structure and function of the sarcomere is a strong plus. This position provides an exciting opportunity to be a part of and grow with a core function within the CV Discovery Biology Department. In this role, the candidate will have an excellent opportunity to learn and develop a career in drug discovery process from target ideation to clinical development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Applies expertise in cardiovascular disease mechanism and pathophysiology (eg. calcium handling, sarcomere function, fibrosis, hypertrophy, etc) to design experiments, lead projects and contribute to overall direction of CV Remodeling group.
  • Independently initiates and leads new exploratory projects to drug novel CV Disease targets.
  • Presents supportive arguments for highly complex ideas and projects to internal governance bodies and external stakeholders to seek endorsement.
  • Provides guidance, mentor, and develop junior scientists in role.
  • Develops collaborations with different functional groups to advance drug discovery projects and develop targeted drug delivery platforms.
  • Proactively fosters relationships across disciplines and participates in the decision-making process for completion of team goals.
  • Maintains up to date working knowledge of principles and theories, applying such knowledge to the research projects that supports Company interests.
  • Demonstrating technical proficiency, scientific creativity, and independent thought in suggesting experimental design and research strategy.
  • Organizes Departmental and group meetings, mentor fellow Scientists and foster safe work environment and direct collaborative efforts.
  • Adapt quickly to adjust workload and priority based on project needs and assignments.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
    • 10+ years of academic and / or industry experience

Or

  • Master’s Degree
    • 8+ years of academic and / or industry experience

Or

  • Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree in the Life Sciences
    • 6+ years of academic and / or industry experience and 2+ years of leadership experience

Preferred Experience:

  • Expertise in cardiovascular disease models and 8 years of relevant research experience in cardiovascular diseases and drug delivery.
  • Knowledge of in vivo CV Disease models, targeted drug delivery and hemodynamics.
  • Extensive experience working with phenotypic screening, target engagement assays, iPSC-derived/neonatal/adult cardiomyocyte models, and genetic intervention (knockdown/out, overexperession, editing)
  • Deep knowledge of heart failure pathogenesis and general cardiovascular disease
  • Experience of leading small team in cardiovascular disease research.
  • Strong background in molecular and cellular biology for disease studies
  • Ability to develop new techniques and methodologies as dictated by research need and introduce new technologies or methods to the team
  • Ability to stay current with the scientific literature and state of the art, as well as interpret literature results in-light-of new findings
  • Independence in problem solving and advancement of scientific projects toward common team goals
  • Proven track records on building great relationships within functions and cross-functionally in collaborative environment.
  • Exceptional communication, presentation, and data analysis skills.
  • Generation of new experimental protocols that may require developing new methods

The starting compensation for this job is a range from $159,000 to $220,000, plus incentive cash and stock opportunities (based on eligibility). The starting pay takes into account characteristics of the job, such as required skills and where the job is performed. Final, individual compensation is decided based on demonstrated experience.
