Nonclinical Research and Development (NCRD) is an integrated function with responsibility for characterizing nonclinical safety and disposition characteristics of the entire BMS Research and Development pipeline programs, with critical role from early discovery to submission of marketing authorization applications. We utilize our deep expertise in toxicology/pathology, ADME, PK/PD, biopharmaceutics and Bioanalytics in all modalities (small and large molecules, cellular therapies and other novel modalities) to collaborate with peer R&D functions to identify and solve issues, discover high quality drug candidates, enable their clinical development and successful marketing authorizations across the globe.

Job Profile

In Discovery Pharmaceutics & Analytical Sciences (DPAS), you will have the ability to impact the lives of patients by working with multi-disciplinary research teams to help discover novel, efficacious and safe therapeutic molecules. BMS is looking for a motivated Principal Scientist with a desire to contribute to the fast paced discovery matrix environment by conducting biophysical characterization and preformulation studies for potential new biologic candidates. The ideal candidate would have a good understanding of biophysical properties of new biologic candidates as they relate to compound liability and developability profiles.

Job Responsibilities

  • Ability to carry out and interpret data from biophysical characterization and preformulation studies on potential new biologics candidates, with the purpose to define their developability and liability profiles.

  • Provide experimental and computational input to protein discovery scientists during design and screening of new biologics entities and enable drug design from lead optimization to the point of candidate identification, characterization and selection.

  • Strategically design and guide the development of formulations suitable for use in drug discovery pharmacology studies, PK studies and initial exploratory toxicology studies.

  • Work in conjunction with discovery teams to enable drug discovery through application of innovative drug delivery technologies or devices, internally and externally, enabling more effective delivery of biologics.

  • Participate in and drive strategic direction of the Discovery Pharmaceutics & Analytical Sciences group to further its ability to act as a problem solving entitiy for biologics discovery teams and provide seamless transfer of candidates to development.

  • Advance the abilities of the larger preclinical optimization organization to develop expertise in scientific areas which can enable our understanding of the role of biophysical properties in the overall biopharmaceutical performance of proteins, antibodies and other large molecules.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree and 5+ years of academic / industry experience

Or

  • Master's Degree and 3+ years of academic / industry experience

Or

  • PhD and with no academic / industry experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD with 4+ years or a B.S/M.S with more than 8 years of experience in industry in Pharmaceutical/ Protein/Analytical Chemistry, or academic equivalent, is highly preferred.

  • Knowledge of basic protein chemistry and biopharmaceutical principles as they apply to drug discovery and drug delivery of proteins, antibodies and other large molecules.

  • Understanding of biophysical properties and analytical methods used for characterization of proteins and other large molecules and how they relate to the biologics’ in vivo delivery and disposition.

  • Strong understanding of preformulation aspects for proteins, antibodies and other large molecules is necessary along with ability to guide the generation and interpretation of preformulation data as it relates to the overall discovery process.

  • An understanding of drug delivery technology/ devices and its assessment relative to the delivery of biologics is desired.

  • Good written and verbal communication skills are a must.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills demonstrating effectiveness as a team player on multidisciplinary teams resourced in a flexible and global environment.

  • The ability to think innovatively and reduce such thinking to practical implementation enabling the discovery and design of new biologics entities is desired.

  • Knowledge on use of computers and databases for data collection, compilation, analysis and information dissemination.
