What are we looking for?

The Material Characterization Scientist will be part of a global team responsible for conducting analytical testing. The successful candidate will be familiar with common types of analytical equipment and be capable of performing sample analyses independently, as well as troubleshooting and method development. A strong background gas chromatography and instrument maintenance is also preferred. Experience with other analytical instrumentation would be considered desirable; particularly Microscopy, Spectroscopy or Rheology.

What you’ll own in this role…

  • Independently perform routine sample testing following established SOPs
  • Confer with scientists and engineers to conduct research projects, interpret test results, or develop nonstandard tests as needed
  • Communicate directly with internal customers to understand project objectives and challenges, and to report results of analyses
  • Write technical reports and SOPs; review existing SOPs for relevance or modification
  • Advance company knowledge of how material chemistry affects the performance of OMNOVA’S products in customer applications
  • Perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting on instruments
  • Manage multiple projects or tasks, and adhere to all safety and quality related policies and procedures.
  • Comply with quality standards of the local and global materials characterization team
  • Provide improvement efficiencies to the lab via methodology or instrumentation advancements
  • Apply a high level of scientific rigor to the analysis and assessment of data and to draw and present conclusions

What you’ll need to be successful…

  • Education: Bachelor of Science in Chemistry (Organic or Analytical preferred)
  • 3-5 years in Industrial Experiences
  • Three or more years’ experience in utilizing analytical techniques to solve scientific problems and advance scientific knowledge. Experience must be outside of required academic curricula (course lab work), but can include experience from undergraduate or graduate research. Techniques include GC, GC-MS, LC, as well as common bench chemistry.
  • Must be able to develop new analytical methods and apply reverse engineering techniques
  • Comfortable collaborating locally and regionally on large projects and working both in a team environment and independently
  • Must be self-motivated, display an interest in the field of analytical chemistry and desire to follow emerging analytical methodology and technique trends. Must possess a desire for self-improvement and continuous learning
  • Proven problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Must be highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects and changing workloads. Must be comfortable working in a high demand environment and possess the flexibility to navigate variable priorities, including short- and long-term projects

What we need from you...

  • Experience with low field NMR
  • Familiarity with polymers and emulsions
  • Advanced statistical analysis
  • Familiarity with Lean or SixSigma tools
  • Continuous Improvement mindset: looks for opportunities to make improvements to processes or procedures
