Leidos currently has an opening for a research scientist to work at the US Department of Energy National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) in Morgantown, WV.

The Research Scientist in this position will support research in Hydrogen Combustion: Fundamentals and Injector Design. The objective of the work is to increase opportunities for hydrogen usage in gas turbine combustors by (1) improving the fundamental combustion knowledge base and addressing issues associated with hydrogen combustion in both premixed and non-premixed low NOx combustion systems using hydrogen and hydrogen/natural gas blends and (2) taking advantage of additive manufacturing (AM) techniques to design fuel injectors for both premixed and non-premixed gas turbine combustion systems.

Responsibilities are functional in nature and performed under limited supervision. Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide fundamental data and validate models for hydrogen and hydrogen-methane fuel blends in a small scale (<100 kW) laboratory burner at atmospheric pressure.
  • Running lab experiments with premixed hydrogen-air on a small-scale burner (100kW) at atmospheric pressure
  • Flame flashback and flame holding will be studied as a function of equivalence ratio and burner characteristics.
  • Measurements will include using laser diagnostics and high-speed cameras to study flame behavior near flashback
  • Data analysis and report writing will also need to be conducted.
  • Active participation in group meetings.
  • Work independently and collaboratively with members of the research team to meet milestones and deliverables.
  • Lead efforts in preparation of technical papers, reports, conference papers, and annual and quarterly reports.
  • Presenting the results of the research at technical conferences and publishing in archival journals.

Required Qualifications:

  • The candidate must have a PhD from an accredited university in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

  • Demonstrated proficiency in collaborating technical findings with external research organizations such as research laboratories and/or academic institutions
  • Ability to document and present research results, including using power point presentations and making podium presentations at technical meetings.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preference for experience in a national laboratory environment or industrial R&D lab where safe working practices are paramount.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the writing of scholarly publications.
