The Director, Product Security and Technology Legal Counsel – is to be based in Kalamazoo, MI or Allendale, NJ, remote locations will also be considered -- will be a key legal partner to Stryker's R&D, IT Digital Cloud (Stryker Health Cloud) and Product Security functions. This attorney will work closely with stakeholders on a broad range of matters impacting technology and product security including:

  • Responsible for counseling on Medical Device Product Security in a global environment, including related Industry Standards (e.g., SOC 2, HITECH), HIPAA, GDPR, FDA and similar local and global laws, regulations, and guidance documents with respect to product cybersecurity;

  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams including Division and Regional Counsels, Global Privacy, Regulatory Law COE, Global Security, Product Security, Regulatory, and R&D and counsels a variety of clients across Stryker on complex technology and product security legal regulatory issues;

  • Keeps abreast of changes in technology and security related laws and regulations that may impact the regulation of Stryker’s product offerings and identifies opportunities to influence content and engages in external influencing efforts;

  • Supports the negotiation of Customer Information Security Agreements, Data Processing Agreements, technology license and similar related agreements;

  • Supports the development and communication of product strategies regarding product technology features and security safeguards to empower business stakeholders to communicate internally and externally;

  • Helps select and directs the work of outside counsel, defines project objectives and manages project to ensure the work, strategy and costs meet Stryker’s expectations; and

  • Conducts technology and security related legal due diligence in connection with potential M&A or other business transactions.

  • Interacts and provides legal and strategic guidance to senior management and functional organizational leadership;

  • Developing and providing in-house training and education in support of the Commercial, R&D, Product Security, Global Security, IT Digital Cloud, Privacy and legal functions, the promoting compliance Stryker in accordance with policies and applicable international, federal and state laws and FDA regulations.

Minimum Education

  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school; strong academic background; admitted to a US state bar in good standing; appropriate licensure to practice law.
  • Software development or technical degree not required, but highly desired

Training/Experience Required

  • Generally, 10+ years of experience and demonstrated product security and technology expertise in providing legal counsel on medical device matters with a major corporation or law firm; device cybersecurity proficiency is desirable; government experience is also beneficial.
  • Must be able to work effectively in a multi-cultural, global team environment as responsibilities including cross-functional collaboration with global Stryker locations and customers/vendors/contractors.
  • Team player, independent, flexible, ability to adapt to change, with strong interpersonal, organizational, communication and presentation skills
    • Ability to travel as needed (post COVID 20%)
  • Ability to maintain confidential information
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite
