POSITION SUMMARY

Working remotely the Attorney will be responsible for legal matters related to Connections Academy charter and program schools and for providing legal advice to various departments and business units on a range of special education, accessibility, ELL, 504 related issues affecting the schools OBL supports, as well as privacy and commercial matters.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with School Support Services in special education matters, including but not limited to, legal advice, legal research, IEP and Section 504 matters
  • Draft preliminary responses to state and federal complaints
  • Work with outside counsel and Executive Director on special education litigation matters
  • Review and analyze federal and state legislation
  • Assist in the area of data privacy
  • Advise, draft and negotiate business agreements
  • Advise key stakeholders in the company regarding special education related legal issues
  • Conduct trainings on special education matters
  • Advise on accessibility issues
  • Draft preliminary responses to federal accessibility complaints
  • Work with outside counsel on accessibility complaint investigations
  • Serve on OBL accessibility workgroup
  • Support OBL Legal corporate attorneys with respect to business and contract language issues impacting the delivery of special education related services
  • Support OBL attorneys on various litigation matters
  • Complete special projects and additional duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate, admitted and in good standing to practice law in at least one US state
  • Minimum of (4) or more years of experience as a licensed attorney
  • Knowledge of special education matters, accessibility law and related issues desirable
  • Ability to understand business objectives and assess risk
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and accurately under tight deadlines
  • Ability to manage a challenging workload independently in a fast-paced work environment
  • Extremely detail-oriented, efficient and able to multi-task, prioritize and follow projects through to completion
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills (including good listening skills) and the ability to communicate effectively with business counterparts
  • Ability to provide sound legal advice that is responsive to the business needs
  • Ability to lead and/or work well in a team environment
  • Strong customer service orientation
  • Good organizational skills
  • Ability to travel to the Columbia, MD office as needed
