In the role as Scientist within the Separation and Analysis Technology Team, the ideal candidate will:

  • Provide separation science support for the drug discovery/medicinal chemistry team at BMS in San Diego, CA
  • Interact closely with a team of scientists, including external service providers, to deliver non-GLP separation science support for the site
  • Develop chromatography methods for chiral and achiral separation at both analytical and preparative scale.
  • Utilize both preparative liquid chromatography (HPLC) and preparative supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) to achieve achiral and chiral separations at milligram to gram scale
  • Provide limited on-site support for compound characterization and physical property measurement, and coordinate with team members at other sites to deliver capabilities not available locally
  • Work with other team members to ensure that the infrastructure is fully operational, and to troubleshoot problems as they arise.
  • Influence the strategic plan for separation science at the site, and to identify and complete continuous improvement projects that may include chromatography method development, infrastructure improvements, IT and process improvements, quality improvements, etc.
  • Apply scientific and / or technical skills and functional knowledge to conduct experiments / research / studies in assigned area
  • Adapt standard methods and techniques by applying breadth of knowledge and prior work experience
  • Make decisions that impact entire work group / project team
  • Contribute to initiatives related to continuous improvement or development of new approaches / technologies
  • Start to develop and implement approaches to new technology and take calculated risks
  • Lead discussions and makes presentations in multidisciplinary meetings, logically presenting information to convey clear, key messages

Basic Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree and 5+ years of academic and / or industry experience

Or

Master’s Degree and 3+ years of academic and / or industry experience

Or

Ph.D. and no years of experience required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in analysis and purification of small molecules by reverse phase HPLC and SFC, including mass spectrometry-based detection.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in chiral separation by supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC).
  • Experience in a high throughput environment managing large numbers of samples and associated data
  • Experience in UV, IR and CD spectroscopy.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, including troubleshooting processes, instruments, and data management issues
  • Proficiency in computer programming using one or more common or instrument-specific languages, laboratory automation, and/or process optimization
  • Proficiency in scientific / technical writing including report summaries
