What you’ll be doing...

We are seeking a Sr. Database Administrator for the Database Administration team in the Network Technology Systems organization. The Database Administration team maintains all database systems that support Verizon network infrastructure. They are responsible for managing all facets of DBA roles, including planning and designing cost effective, highly available, and scalable systems; devising, implementing, and maintaining Backup, Archive, and Recovery (BAR) strategies; monitoring, troubleshooting, and tuning database systems for performance; and analyzing system demand and ensuring capacity.

As the Sr. Database Administrator you will oversees the design and implementation of next generation database technologies for very large databases. You will partner with business teams and technology vendors to design and build cost effective yet high-performing secured systems. You will also proactively assess system demand for required additional capacity and create a framework for monitoring. Responsibilities will include but not limited to:

  • Planning, designing, and building high performance database systems in the Network Systems organization.
  • Partnering with application teams in Network and IT and successfully integrating complex, multi-terabyte OLTP and Data Warehousing database systems.
  • Designing next generation database technologies to improve availability and performance of very large databases and implement cost effective and optimized backup and recovery solutions for complex database environments.
  • Upholding enterprise data security policy guidelines and recommending new/improved guidelines.
  • Leading in the technical assessments, creating technically viable and cost-effective system designs, providing detailed technical design for enterprise solutions, and developing customer-focused implementation strategies.
  • Partnering with project teams and interacting with application teams and technology vendors to customize/find solutions for projects and operational issues for existing and proposed databases.
  • Performing proactive capacity planning, recommending and implementing solutions to provide scalability, availability, security, stability, and performance.
  • Conducting PoCs with new DB technologies and/or benchmark tests to gauge hardware capacity and meet application capacity & demand requirements
  • Mentoring other DBAs in the group.
  • Providing tasks and timelines to support the creation of project plans with appropriate updates for those tasks throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Providing on-call and off hours support for databases as required.

Where you'll be working

In this hybrid role, you'll have a defined work location that includes work from home and assigned office days set by your manager.

What we’re looking for...

You’ll need to have:

  • Bachelor's degree or four or more years of work experience.
  • Six or more years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience in Oracle database administration in an enterprise environment supporting all aspects of an Oracle Database Server with emphasis on 2-tiered and 3-tiered architecture.
  • Experience in Oracle RMAN, Oracle Golden Gate, Oracle Data Guard (physical), RAC, Exadata, ASM, Partitioning, Oracle VM, Oracle Advanced Security, and Grid Control.
  • Experience in monitoring and tuning Oracle databases for optimum performance and assistance in capacity planning of Oracle database servers.
  • Experience in Jenkins automation.

Even better if you have one or more of the following:

  • Three years of experience with UNIX operating system (preferably Solaris and Linux platforms), shell scripting techniques – Korn Shell, AWK, SED, and 1 year experience with Perl.
  • Two or more years of ORACLE 12c/19c SQL development including package/ procedure/trigger/ XML development in a multi-user production environment.
  • Experience in AWS, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Cassandra, and MemSQL.
  • Knowledge about Relational Database design and analysis
  • Proficient in SQL.
  • Hands-on automation experience using Ansible and Python.
  • Working knowledge of Exadata and Virtualization.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience in working independently with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Experience in MS Excel, Word, Powerpoint, and Access.
  • Knowledge of telecommunications network engineering principles and standards.
