Job Description

The Head of Run Operations for Research & Early Development IT will be responsible for leading the ongoing run operations across the R&ED platforms. This is a critical role in leading the strategy and management of the run operations to minimize any disruption to the scientific research process, which is enabled by digital capabilities and data. This includes leading a matrixed team of professionals which includes internal staff and external Service Provider resources to provide an optimized user experience to our R&ED scientific community. This role will report to the Executive Director, R&ED Digital Engineering.

The Head of Run Operations will drive the evolution from a distributed operating support model to a highly coordinated set of support capabilities built on Scaled Scrum/Agile framework. and champion an evolving culture of excellence and agile ways of working. Key to this role will be the candidate’s depth of understanding of challenges and opportunities of managing the support of an extensive set of research applications across multiple scientific domains and geographic locations.

To achieve this, it will be critical that this position works closely with our R&ED IT functional and technical colleagues to develop and implement operational excellence strategies to ensure the integrity and life-cycle management of the R&ED platforms and operational services per the service requirements, ensuring business continuity, and maximizing the value.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Translating Run Operations Support R&ED into a unified Support strategy. Translating the strategy into execution of multi-functional initiatives applying common principles, systems and tools to achieve sustainable improvement of key support performance metrics.
  • Creating the run operations sourcing strategy, and transition to an optimal support staffing model.
  • Key contributor to deliver optimal user experience for support services.
  • Managing a team of professionals in delivering functional support of R&ED research platforms. Coordinating with managed service providers, vendors, project teams, business stakeholders, and other IT support resources to achieve an optimal user experience and service performance.
  • Work closely with R&ED Digital colleagues and informatics scientists, to achieve effective functional support to various research groups and R&ED teams with group leaders and scientists.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional R&ED leadership to identify the optimal support organization through the effective management of software demand and entitlements (TCO) and funding execution through understanding of business objectives, P&L scope and resourcing needs; and partnering with leadership to eliminate barriers.
  • Developing operational support improvement planning processes that align with business strategy and with business planning at corporate and operational levels
  • Managing the development of new tools and support management techniques, driving the evaluation of existing processes, and developing plans to improve support processes across R&ED
  • Developing strategy for license management and responsibility for license compliance
  • Leading the operational excellence initiatives across R&ED IT.
  • Promoting a culture of excellence and continuous improvement and embedding it into our daily work
  • Driving the priorities and resource model across the R&ED Run organization with periodic (annual/semiannual) adjustments in alignment with the R&ED strategy and priorities, supporting cost management by making choices consistent with financial goals
  • Staying up to date on developments in Scaled Scrum and Support methodologies and best practices
  • Coaching / mentoring stakeholders at all levels to support them through the adoption of new Operational Support principles and practices

Management Responsibility:

  • 5-6 direct employees: Direct line management of the Run Operations for Research & Early Development IT team
  • Oversight of 100-150 contingent support provider resources


Travel:

  • Up to 10%

Required Knowledge/Skills/Qualifications

Experience/Knowledge:

  • 10+ years leadership experience in Applications Delivery or Operations /Support roles
  • Able to identify improvement opportunities, translate into tangible initiatives and drive execution of projects.
  • Able to build relationships/networks, able to negotiate & influence, manage change in matrix environment and lead change through others.
  • Track record of success in the rigorous planning, execution and timely delivery of projects and programs; demonstrated proficiency in managing the support of a large, complex portfolio of applications.
  • Proven innovation & opportunity identification translated into tangible initiatives and successful execution.
  • Exceptional skills in leadership, coaching, analytical problem solving and strong business acumen.
  • Exceptional builder and leader of high-performance teams.
  • Superior written and verbal communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Expertise in working with support partners, especially offshore.
