Responsibilities:

This individual will be responsible for leading a small team providing separation science support for the drug discovery/medicinal chemistry group at BMS in San Diego, CA. He or she will lead a team of 1-2 BMS scientists and a varying number of external service providers, to deliver non-GLP separation science support for the site, including

  • A high throughput small molecule purification service, using both preparative liquid chromatography (HPLC) and preparative supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC), for achiral and chiral separations, including needed method development, and post purification processing.
  • Local onsite support for separation and physical property measurements, and coordination with team members at other sites to deliver capabilities not available locally.
  • Ensuring operational support of a fleet of analytical LCMS instruments used by medicinal chemists for routine reaction checking and compound QC; ensuring that the infrastructure is fully operational, tracking usage and output metrics, interacting with medicinal chemists, and troubleshooting problems as they arise.
  • Alignment with the external service provider to ensure that scheduling and training are matched to requirements to ensure smooth and efficient operation of the lab.

In addition to the operational role described above, the individual will be responsible for working with management to develop, implement, and update the strategic plan for separation science at the expanding site, including:

  • Participating in design and eventual move into a newly constructed purpose-built facility adjacent to the existing site in San Diego.
  • Identifying and completing continuous improvement projects that may include chromatography method development, infrastructure improvements, IT and process improvements, quality improvements, etc.

The individual’s immediate supervisor in this role will be located at a different site (in New Jersey). Frequent telecommunication and occasional (1-2 times/year) travel will be required between sites.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree & 8+ years of relevant academic and / or industry experience

Or

  • Master’s Degree & 6+ years of relevant academic and / or industry experience

Or

  • Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree in the Life Sciences & 4+ of relevant academic and / or industry experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D and 4+ years of relevant industry experience
  • Extensive experience in analysis and purification of small molecules and/or peptides by reverse phase HPLC and SFC, and in mass spectrometry.
  • Demonstrated strategic leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, including troubleshooting processes, instruments, and data management issues.
  • Ability to work independently, without local supervision.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Proven record of accomplishment of successful project management and completion in a highly matrixed environment.
  • Experience in a high throughput environment managing large numbers of samples and associated data is strongly desired.
  • Experience in a drug discovery environment is strongly desired.
  • Experience in computer programming (one or more common or instrument-specific languages), laboratory automation, and/or process optimization are highly desired.
  • Supervisory experience is desirable.
