Associate Director, Digital Capability Management Lead for Process Automation Systems (PAS)

Reporting into the Director, IT Business Partnering, Digital Plant for Parenteral Expansion, Phoenix, the Digital Capability Management Lead for Process Automation Systems (PAS) position will be responsible for setting the architecture, design and deployment of the Process Automation Systems and interfaces at Phoenix.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

This role will lead a matrixed organization composed of site direct reports, indirect reports as well as contractors to deliver effective, innovative, and stable solutions that meet the needs of the facility. The Associate Director, Automation Control Systems Lead provides discipline focused project management, subject matter expertise, technical leadership and accountability for Automation Engineering in the delivery of the program and engineering services post commercial production start.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Will be the primary point of contact for Phoenix Automation solution deliverables.
  • Leads architectural design while leveraging global standards and external (integrator) expertise to meet program objectives
  • Oversees external integrator team (3-10) to ensure project deliverables are met in time and according to specifications.
  • Establish the engineering staff, including senior level engineers and managers. Being a mentor developing future leaders.
  • Partnering with Mfg. Operations, MS&T, Engineering, Quality, Enterprise IT team (MES, SAP, Maximo, LIMS), Enterprise Business team and local system Digital Capability Managers to deliver the requirements for the Phoenix Expansion Program with respect to PAS

Acts as Sub-Project Manager for Automation Engineering with personal responsibility for

  • Defining roles and responsibilities of the control automation sub team comprised of SMEs, integrators, and contractors (5-12 individuals)
  • Ensure alignment with key stakeholders such as GMO IT, Manufacturing operations, MS&T, Quality, CSV, and project management team
  • Close coordination across disciplines especially MES, BAS, BI, and ERP
  • Project Planning: Regular status updates including progress vs plan, risks, mitigations; Development of detailed Schedule based on Work Breakdown Structure; Resourcing & estimating
  • Expresses relevant information timely, clearly and concisely to relevant stakeholders including adjusting communication style to the audience being addressed
  • Partners proactively with key customers, team members and stakeholders, while being open and approachable with a friendly, positive, and professional attitude
  • Challenges the status-quo and develops creative solutions within the framework of Global Standards and Processes
  • Leads proactive measures to achieve the specified goals in the event of deviations from the project plan
  • Maintain ownership of assigned work-package within discipline through all project phases so that target functionality, quality and reliability are achieved


Discipline Specifics

  • Perform the role of Senior Expert within the Automation Engineering Community of Practices
  • Mentor and coach less experienced engineers
  • Expertise in developing and executing the automation strategy including technology selection, level of automation justification, flexibility, and cost benefit analysis
  • Technology expertise includes DCS, MES, BAS and PLC
  • Experienced in planning and execution of automation system commissioning and qualification
  • Work is largely self-directed and exercises considerable latitude in determining objectives and approaches to assignments. Provides guidance and manages work activities of others.

Education / Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related discipline with 10 to 12 years of experience preferable in pharmaceutical/biopharmaceutical
  • Preferred Requirements MS in Engineering and/or an MBA
  • Able to execute scope that is complex and mid-sized to large
  • Strong experience in design, build, qualification and installation of DCS/MES - Preferred - Emerson’s, Rockwell Automation, PLC, ISA-88
