What you’ll be doing...

As a Principal Engineer, you will help improve how Network Operations manages the network, the service we provide our customers, the tools we utilize, the deployment of new technologies, and the network itself. This role will need to partner with numerous organizations within Verizon, our vendors, and leadership to move the business forward and improve the service to our customers. You are expected to perform their duties with little supervision and participate closely with cross-function planning and engineering teams. You may be asked to drive business transformation efforts, new revenue-generating initiatives, or analytics across one or more Verizon business units. These transformation initiatives will be conceived at the highest levels of the organization and, as such, will have visibility at that level.

You will be working on the Unified Transport (UT) Tier II Support Team, focusing on providing the iEN/UT NMC high level technical Tier 2 support (Layers 0-3). This team works on developing solutions that drive the success of Verizon’s bleeding-edge Networks and Platforms.

  • Providing high level technical Tier 2 support on the Unified Transport network.
  • Resolving complex issues and escalations from internal and external groups.
  • Developing and leading technical training with Network Performance & Operations Engineers.
  • Engaging with vendors, system administrators, and network personnel to resolve issues.
  • Participating in Engineering and Planning activities to support both existing and new functionality as business requirements evolve.
  • Developing scripts and/or programs to use automation and eliminate manual tasks.
  • Leading projects for supporting network upgrades, resolution of complex network troubles including interaction with Maintenance Engineering and Vendors and Network Planning.
  • Identifying, evaluating, and driving new opportunities through an expert-level comprehension of network design, routing \ switching, and the protocols used in the network stack to deliver intelligence and resiliency.
  • Embracing agile methodologies and lead the effort to transform the way we do operations by promoting a DevOps and Automation mindset.
  • Engaging in network migration activities associated with rolling services to the new iEN and subsequent decommissioning of older networks over the coming years.

In this remote role, you'll work from home with occasional in-person trainings and meetings.

What we’re looking for...

You'll need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or four or more years of work experience.
  • Six or more years of relevant work experience.
  • Willingness to work rotating schedule (shifts) including nights, weekends, and holidays based on the needs of the business.

Even better if you have one or more of the following:

  • Knowledge of IPv4, IPv6, QoS, Multicast, MPLS, IP Routing Protocols like ISIS, OSPF, BGP, L3VPN, L2VPN, Traffic Engineering using BGP and MPLS-TE.
  • Knowledge of Ethernet Switching technologies and Protocols.
  • Experience in Python Scripting and Automation Experience.
  • Experience in Optical Transport Technologies – ULH and ROADM.
  • Experience in configuring and maintaining Carrier Ethernet Switching.
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology.
  • Ability to solve complex problems and coordinate with cross functional teams on escalated issues.
  • Strong organizational, team management, project management, event coordination, and documentation skills.
  • Experience in leading a team with proven facilitation, change management, and problem-solving experience.
  • Experience in one or more scripting languages (Perl, Python, Shell, Ruby).
  • Technological certifications.
