WORK SCHEDULE:

Monday – Friday, between the hours of 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m., 20-25 hours per week.

Position requires employee to work between 20-25 hours per week, not to exceed 1,500 hours in a calendar year. Each semester, undergraduate students must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours and graduate students must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours.

INTERN GUIDELINES:

Students who have completed at least one year of college and are enrolled as a full-time student may apply. Must be enrolled full-time in a degree seeking program. A student’s intern position will end within three months after graduation.

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Under the direction of the Manager-SpringNet Network Architecture and Support or designee, supports the operation of Ethernet networks, security, monitoring, Internet services and operations. Duties will be dependent on departmental workload and may include any or all duties described below.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. First level troubleshooting responsible for the restoration of ethernet networks, servers, and customer services.
  2. Troubleshoots network equipment including, but not limited to routers and switches.
  3. Assists in the plans for network development and growth, including the recommendation of new equipment, technologies, and software.
  4. Assists in configuration and patch maintenance on various types of devices.
  5. Assists in the creation of network troubleshooting and maintenance procedures to be used in the Network Operations Center (NOC).
  6. Assists in the creation of network configuration, monitoring, and troubleshooting tools.
  7. Assists in automation of systems and processes.
  8. Routine monitoring of system logs.
  9. Maintains network records regarding switch/router configuration, private and public address allocation.
  10. Assists in the configuration and installation of Ethernet network and server equipment.
  11. Stays current on evolving LAN, WAN, optical network, and network security issues.
  12. With aid of Network Engineers, works with network protocols, including but not limited to TCP/IP, OSPF, MPLS, SNMP and VPLS.
  13. Performs other related duties as required or assigned by management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

Completion of one year of college and working towards a degree with a major in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related field from an accredited institution is required.

Licensing/Certification:

This position requires a valid driver’s license (minimum Class F).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • High analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Desire to learn Ethernet, OSPF, BGP, and MPLS network protocols.
  • Ability to:

o Quickly learn and become familiar with technical subjects is essential.

o Communicate clearly, concisely, and convey technical information in non-technical terms on the phone, through email and in person.

o Effectively handle multiple assignments simultaneously.

o Have excellent oral and written presentation skills.

o Work courteously with customers, co-workers, and individuals in other departments.

o Work under pressure and meet deadlines.

o Make good decisions and seek assistance as needed.

Physical Requirements:

Typically, sedentary work. Ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word and receive detailed information through oral communication. Substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers, and close visual acuity to operate a computer is required.

Working Conditions:

Duties are primarily performed in an office environment.

Miscellaneous Requirements:

  • New hires are informed of the requirements of the Internship Program upon hire, and incumbents must continue to meet the requirements each semester in order to continue employment. Interns who do not meet the requirements may be ineligible for the internship and their employment may be terminated.
  • Must be able to work successfully with diverse groups of people.
  • Employees must remain alert and aware of their surroundings at all times and maintain the ability to respond to changing circumstances in a timely manner.

TESTING:

Testing may be required.
