The Special Projects Division currently has an opening for a Senior Airworthiness Engineer who will oversee the airworthiness certification process for all division projects. The job of the Senior Airworthiness Engineer is to develop procedures and systems that will identify as well as track compliance with all applicable civilian and government airworthiness requirements (Ex: FAR Parts 23 and 25, MIL-HDBK-516).

Specific duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Support of airworthiness plans, basis of certifications, means of compliance, and certification for total systems across multiple programs.

  • Assisting Program Managers and Systems Engineers to identify airworthiness requirements for both experimental and type certification programs.

  • Developing new and refining existing airworthiness requirement processes.

  • Use and further develop tools for tracking requirements, means of compliance, compliance artifacts, and approvals.

  • Liaison with various FAA and US Military Airworthiness Entities, such as FSDO, MIDO, DAR, DER, SRD, and LCMC.

  • Assists program owners in understanding and maintaining costs and schedule for airworthiness or certification efforts.

  • This position relies heavily on the following skills: working knowledge of US civil and military airworthiness regulations and how to apply these to both design projects and continuing airworthiness programs, and systems engineering process knowledge, leadership, communication, and ability to work independently and within a team.

  • This role will have the potential for up to 10% travel to support multiple programs.

  • Supports program audits from various authorities, including AS9100, DCMA, and FAA.

  • Coordinate with other internal engineering disciplines and review deliverables throughout the product development lifecycle (design, fabrication, test, installation, operation, maintenance, and disposal).

  • Decompose airworthiness certification basis requirements and manage compliance products.

  • Manage the airworthiness component of overall system development, to ensure the solution meets program objectives and customer requirements (flight releases, type certification, and continued airworthiness).

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, Aviation Sciences, or other technical areas with a minimum of twelve (12) years of experience; additional years of experience may be considered in lieu of degree.

  • Experience with FAA and US Military aviation certification requirements and processes.

  • Prior experience working directly with civilian and military airworthiness entities.

  • Active DoD Secret clearance with the ability to maintain.

  • Must be a US citizen.

  • Willingness to relocate to Harrisonburg, Virginia area.

Preferred Qualifications

  • FAA DER license

  • Knowledge and experience with MIL-HDBK-516C certification basis development.

  • Knowledge and experience with 14 CFR Part 21 certification processes for Part 23 and 25 aircraft.

  • Degree in Aviation or Aeronautical Engineering discipline.

  • System safety, and airworthiness processes and regulations experience (14CFR, MIL-HDBK-516, AFI).

  • Active TS/SCI clearance.

  • Experience developing certification artifacts for aircraft programs (Certification Plans, Compliance Matrices, Summary Compliance documents, Means of Compliance requirements and statements, and Certification Basis).

  • Experience writing and capturing Airworthiness compliance requirements and documentation.
