Job Description:

The Leidos NISC IV Program is looking for a Senior Electrical Engineer. This position provides support for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Power Services Group under the National Air-Space Implementation Support Contract (NISC) with respect to Lightning and Surge Protection, Grounding, Bonding and Shielding (LPGBS).

This is a part time position, estimated up to 80 hours per month. Workload varies depending on customer requirements. The schedule is typically Monday - Friday, 9am - 5pm, when work is assigned.

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide engineering consultation for compliance with FAA and industry standards and best practices and provide recommendations for solutions in all phases of the system’s lifecycle including: contract, policy, site survey, design and design review, and implementation.
  • Participate in the site survey, technical evaluation, development, administration, management, logistic, and strategy of project planning and implementation
  • Break down complex issues into task and prepare scope of work and cost estimate based on government’s LPGBS work break down structure.
  • Teaching workshops related to LPGBS and FAA standards
  • Manage National Change Proposal, Configuration Control Board process, and departmental website

The following set of skills/knowledge will lead to successful career in this position:

  • Knowledge and direct work experience in FAA power systems, lightning protection and grounding, surge protective devices, bonding, and shielding is a must.
  • The ideal candidate must have strong writing skills exhibited through engineering reports, thesis or dissertation papers at academic institutions; white papers, or publications at nationally/internationally recognized technical organizations.
  • Experience with some or all of the following are required: transients in power distribution systems, engine generator, UPS, grounding, lightning protection.
  • Familiarity with industry standards, such as IEEE Emerald Book, UL 1449, NFPA 780, NEC, ANSI C62 and other industry standards related to LPGBS.
  • The ideal candidate will also have knowledge of FAA equipment, facilities and systems (such as VOR, PAPI, ILS, Radars, NAVAIDS, ATCT, TRACON, ARTCC), FAA technical policies, orders, standards and handbooks.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering consultation for compliance with FAA and industry standards and best practices and provide recommendations for solutions in all phases of the system’s lifecycle including: contract, policy, site survey, design and design review, and implementation.
  • Participate in the site survey, technical evaluation, development, administration, management, logistic, and strategy of project planning and implementation.
  • Prepare technical reports/white papers related to LPGBS issues, identify systemic problems and provide recommendations, including cost estimate and project prioritization, to government clients.
  • Break down complex issues into task and prepare scope of work and cost estimate based on government’s LPGBS work break down structure
  • Teaching workshops related to LPGBS and FAA standards.


Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited college in a related discipline, or equivalent experience/combined education, with 8 years of professional experience; or 6 years of professional experience with a Master degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience with FAA power systems, lightning protection and grounding, surge protective devices, bonding, and shielding transient in power systems, lightning protection and grounding, shielding, EMP, EMI, RFI and mitigation.
  • Writing skills exhibited through exhibited through engineering reports, thesis or dissertation papers at academic institutions; white papers, or publications at nationally/internationally recognized technical organizations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of technical expertise through experience in site survey and teaching lightning and surge protection, grounding, bonding and shielding, especially in FAA or military environment.
  • Knowledge of FAA systems (i.e. VOR, PAPI, ILS, Radars, NAVAIDS, ATCT, TRACON, ARTCC), technical policies, standards and orders as well as military and industry standards such as industry standards, such as IEEE Emerald Book, UL 1449, NFPA 780, NEC, ANSI C62 and other industry standards related to LPGBS.
  • Willing to travel, approximately 50% of the time.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of national/international/government standards and orders on grounding, lightning protection, short circuit coordination, arc flash studies, engine generator, UPS and other systems.

Pay Range:

Pay Range $94,250.00 - $145,000.00 - $195,750.00
