Lead Software Engineer
Overview
State Farm plans to modernize the Claim System and all supporting claims systems to Public Cloud. The Modernization team, in partnership with several department areas, created a multistep approach to convert the Claim System and deploy it to AWS. Specifically, The Modernization approach will include a plan for Mainframe Modernization.
The Mainframe Modernization team is accountable for the analysis, rearchitecture, and conversion of all mainframe jobs/applications/programs within the scope of the Claim System modernization effort. To accelerate the modernization, we are partnering with Blu Age (recently purchased by AWS) who is a vendor who specializes in Mainframe code conversion. This vendor will partner with our Mainframe Modernization team to act as an accelerator to convert existing mainframe apps to AWS Java-based applications.

Responsibilities
The Mainframe Modernization team is looking for a Lead Software Engineer to partner with AWS to convert existing mainframe apps to AWS Java based applications. In addition, this resource will be accountable to guide Product Teams in converting their mainframe assets through the AWS Blu Age mainframe modernization process and assisting in deploying the modernized code. This resource will also develop reusable software, CI/CD pipeline components that will be used by product teams, and software architecture best practices which will be utilized across Claims as we scale our Mainframe Modernization effort.
Qualifications
- Experience building and deploying Spring Boot apps
- Experience building and deploying solutions to AWS (ECS Fargate, S3, Lambda, etc...)
- Languages - Java, Terraform, JavaScript/NodeJs, Bash script
- Experience with GitLab and CI/CD
- Customer-focused and data-driven mindset
- Emotional intelligence and the ability to thrive with diverse and demanding stakeholders
- Strong facilitation and communication skills (verbal, written, illustration)
- Ability to articulate technical and non-technical concepts in a simple and consumable approach, connecting team goals to higher level goals of the organization
- A growth mindset with particular interest in workforce skill and experience challenges associated with moving to the cloud
Preferred:
- Experience with Blu Age tooling (External only)
- Mainframe experience with COBOL, JCL, and dev tools
- Experience with relational DBMS (PostgreSQL and DB2)
- Experience with graph databases (Neo4j)
- Active participation and contribution within a community of practice
- Demonstrated experience navigating the organization and delivering results in a cross-functional environment
- AWS and other technical certifications
- Experience developing training content and training/coaching/mentoring others
- Learning agility and a track record of continuous learning

Compensation Range: $85,500-$201,300
For California, New York, and Connecticut candidates:
Potential salary range: $85,500 - $228,750
Potential yearly inventive pay: up to 15% of base salary
