Leidos is a FORTUNE 500 company bringing a mix of innovative technology and sector expertise to customers in the national security, engineering, and the health industries.

Leidos is seeking a Technical Writer to support the design, development, testing, and qualification of a US Army mobile, ground-based weapon system designed to defeat subsonic cruise missiles, unmanned aircraft systems, rockets, artillery, and mortars, and other aerial threats as required.

This position will be located in Chesapeake, VA with travel expected at approximately 10%.


The successful candidate will work with a small team of ILS professionals as an embedded part of the overall system design, development, and integration process to define support requirements, plan for life cycle sustainment, and produce ILS products in accordance with US Army regulations.


Primary Responsibilities

  • As part of a multi-functional, matrixed team, this Technical Writer will be responsible for developing a system operations manual in accordance with MIL-STD-40051-2 Table A-II and MIL-HDBK-1222.

  • Will work closely with the systems engineering and ILS teams to identify operations and maintenance tasks, test, measurement, and diagnostic equipment, and various procedures, warnings, and indicators for inclusion in the system technical documentation.

  • Will support the development of logistics product data such as provisioning data, repair parts and special tools listing, and assist in maintenance task analyses. The Technical Writer will work closely with training developers to ensure the technical documentation and training support package are complimentary and inclusive of all necessary data. The Technical Writer will be responsible for facilitating and validating all copyright release data and permissions. The Technical Writer will also prepare for and take part in system test planning and execution, verification, and validation events as required.

  • Will assist in the development of in-process review briefings, review; comment on, and develop logistics related documents, plans and report; draft technical papers; participate in project evaluations; respond to customer inquiries; and ensure product technical quality. The candidate will provide direct support to the Leidos ILS Manager on all technical logistics efforts, integration with the systems engineering process and team, and attend all scheduled meetings as required.

Basic Qualifications

  • Must currently possess an active Secret Clearance.

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 8 or more years of prior relevant experience; or a Masters Degree and 6 or more years of prior relevant experience. Additional years of experience will be considered in lieu of degree.

  • Direct experience providing ILS for military acquisition programs and programs of record.

  • Direct experience with MIL-STD-40051-2 Table A-II and MIL-HDBK-1222.

  • Experienced using Adobe FrameMaker for the development of linked .pdf documents.

  • Strong communication skills.

  • Demonstrated experience working within matrixed teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with the development of mil-spec technical documentation to include interactive electronic technical manuals.

  • Familiarity with provisioning and the US Army logistics product database tools, techniques, procedures, and products.

  • Familiarity with the Systems Approach to Training method for training development and implementation.

  • Direct experience supporting US military missile defense program offices.
