Job Description:

The Leidos NISC IV program is looking for a Technical Writer to join our team in Washington, DC and support the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

General Responsibilities include:

Writes, edits, and rewrites manuscript copy for reference manuals, operations manuals, user manuals, and programming manuals for software and computer operations. Coordinates with programmers and software engineering to verify knowledge of subject in preparation for writing assignment. Captures accurate details from meetings and creates concise meeting notes and minutes. Compiles and prepares status reports using received team content. Prepares illustrative material such as drawings, sketches, diagrams, and charts. May assist in preparation and design of technical documentation for publication. Capable of preparing work products using Microsoft (MS) Word styles, templates, and advanced text and graphic formatting functions.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Creates text and graphics for a variety of technical and non-technical documents, including proposals, project documentation, user manuals, government regulations, technical reports and brochures, and meeting minutes and notes.
  • Interviews and works with team members and other information sources to collect information. Accurately collects detailed information during interviews and meetings.
  • Gathers content from multiple sources and melds into homogenous and consistent text, ensuring consistency from multiple authors. Establishes tone for intended audience. Eliminates redundancy, awkward sentence construction, wordiness and jargon. Copy edits draft documents to ensure correctness of grammar, punctuation, spelling, sentence structure, and usage.
  • Rewrites text of previously prepared manuscripts to rearrange, reword, and generally strengthen communication effectiveness of material.
  • Collaborates with senior writer to develop content for technical, end-user, and training materials as well as project summary and product marketing products including handouts and presentations.
  • Prepares weekly and monthly status reports for customers. Performs all other task order and project communications duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Requires a BA degree and 2-4 years of prior relevant experience

  • Possesses attention to details and awareness of product quality while gathering information and performing all documentation processes.
  • Ensures maintenance of a consistency and quality across assigned documentation work products. Capable of working within compressed schedules.
  • Exhibits proficiency with software tools used to develop documents and presentations (including MS Word, PowerPoint, and Visio), including use of document templates and styles. Possesses the ability to adapt documentation tools and templates when needed.
  • Capable of understanding and accurately capturing business process and system technical information for use within documentation products.
  • Demonstrates ability to understand automated information system processes and logic.
  • Displays understanding of publications design concepts. Demonstrates ability to translate complex business and system concepts for communication to diverse audiences.
  • Exhibits knowledge of graphical communications concepts. Capable of creating snapshot images of system user interfaces for use within technical documents.
  • Demonstrates ability to understand automated information system processes and logic. Understands automated information system processes, system logic, graphical user interface (GUI) design approaches as used within Web-based and client/server applications.
  • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of System Development Lifecycle (SDLC) and Agile development concepts with specific understanding of SDLC documentation needs and products.
  • Exhibits a self-motivated approach to information and product development when situations require minimal guidance and supervision.
  • Demonstrates the ability to accurately follow documentation standards and development procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Understands graphical user interface (GUI) design approaches as used within Web-based and client/server applications.
  • Demonstrates understanding of System Development Lifecycle (SDLC) concepts. Possesses ability to design and develop automated documentation tools and templates using VBA, MS Word, and MS Excel.

Note: The candidate will be working remote full-time due to the current COVID situation and will be expected to report in Washington DC office minimum 2 days/wk in future. The candidate should be flexible to attend in person meetings with the customer when needed.
