Director is accountable for all environmental, health, safety and sustainability programs and execution for the Corporate HQ campus in Kenilworth, NJ. Leads the EHS team and partners with other peer sites in the network to achieve regulatory compliance, drive continuous improvement and create a spirit of innovation where we strive to achieve more in new and exciting ways. Models a strong compliance mindset, drawing on prior EHS and/or manufacturing experiences to leverage as a basis for action. Energized by identifying and developing talent.
Assures compliance with OSHA and EPA through the development, maintenance, and enforcement of Merck EHS Policies and Procedures and conditions in accordance with all local, state, federal and corporate program requirements.
Creates a talent strategy and sense of community, consistent with the Global GSE strategy, that seeks to identify, develop, and engage new and existing team members.
Facilitates global team cohesion and accountability through rapid communication and best practice sharing with peers and management.
Serves as site liaison for federal, state and regional health and safety agencies as well as for site internal audits.
Develop and oversee all EHS reports, regulatory permits and record keeping requirements to operate the facility compliantly.
Responsible for liaising and interacting with business leaders and EHS leadership to support business growth. Responsible for providing creative and compliant solutions and metrics/results to the above- mentioned stakeholders.
Ensures robust emergency response plans are prepared, reviewed and regularly exercised.
Drives improvement in environment health and safety measures through the use of innovative techniques, tools and sigma methodology.
Anticipates, recognizes and responds to changing internal and external trends, market conditions and legislation and develops strategies to that are progressive, compliant and sustainable.
Performs timely and thorough root cause analysis on EHS events to determine specific actions needed to prevent their reoccurrence.
Shared-accountability for owning delivering against the Merck Sustainability Goals
Manages the employee EHS site training program, including defining, developing and delivering training curricula.
Develops and measures performance against the site EHS&S budget.
Must have a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Engineering or related science. Preference given to certifications such as CIH, CSP, PE or lean sigma.
Must have a clear and recognizable understanding of processes and equipment for laboratories, utilities, and/or manufacturing operations.
Required Experience and Skills:
At least 10 years broad EHS or manufacturing experience with proven leadership outcomes.
Computer savvy with emphasis on MS Office, including advanced Excel and database skills. Must be willing to learn new applications including Microsoft Teams, Sharepoint Enablon, Spotfire, Tableau etc. as directed.
Vision and sound judgement combined with a willingness to influence and offer new ideas.
Demonstrates agility and is self-directed and intellectually curious. Thrives in a fast pace environment.
Proven capability to hire, coach, and develop talent.
Builds and cultivates collaborative relationships with peers and clients across the network.
Ability to simultaneously balance and adjust to multiple changing priorities and make decisions with speed, discipline and accuracy.
