Quality & Continuous Improvement Engineer

Armstrong Flooring, Inc. (AFI) has an opportunity for a Quality & Continuous Improvement Engineer to be located at our Lancaster, PA plant. The Quality Engineer is responsible for driving improvements to the Quality Management System, supporting new product development, improving on product and process capabilities, and handling internal and external customer complaints. The ideal candidate for this position will have previous experience working in a manufacturing environment and leading quality and process improvement initiatives. This position will report to the Plant Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The position owns Quality and Process in plant operations and is the direct link to the Corporate Quality group and is the first line of contact of Quality to the customer. If applicable the position will direct process engineers and ELDP associates in delivering and providing technical services to support the manufacturing production processes and quality of those processes. In addition, the position plays a critical role in our Lean efforts as we continuously strive to improve our processes and reduce waste. Responsibilities include the following.

  • Develops and implements quality improvement plans

  • Fulfills documentation and reporting requirements for the Quality Management System.

  • Assists in determining gaps in the Quality Management Systems and driving improvements to the system, process, and/or policies.

  • Resolve customer complaints and issues and ensure resolution is aligned with AFI processes and procedures.

  • Implement action plans and improve processes to prevent/reduce future customer complaints.

  • Analyze customer data/manufacturing processes to identify possible risks, understand consequences of costs and determine viability of customer partnerships.

  • Communicate with customers and internal groups regarding customer reported problems and manufacturing quality reported problems.

  • Mobilize teams of direct and non-direct reports to address product capability and customer issues.

  • Support development and maintenance of manufacturing process based on Voice of the Customer (VOC).

  • Utilize problem solving tools (5 Why, A3, Fishbone, DMAIC tools) during problem solving and root cause analysis work.

  • Audit standard work / work instructions to identify training gaps and addresses issues found.

  • Audit line quality processes for compliance and effectiveness.

  • Audit processes within the manufacturing plant defining gaps and correcting as needed

  • Capable to test items by analyzing size, weight, chemical composition, and components as needed.

  • Improve upon materials and parts used in production process through data analysis.

  • Ensure production process meets industry standards and/or internal specifications

  • Creates reports for quality control and analyzes the data to determine if any changes in the production process are necessary.

  • Devises sampling procedures and designs and develops forms and instructions for recording, evaluating, and reporting quality and reliability data.

  • Establish program to evaluate precision and accuracy of production equipment and testing, measurement, and analytical equipment and facilities.

  • Develops and implements methods and procedures for disposition of discrepant material and devises methods to assess cost and responsibility.

  • Compiles and writes training material and conducts training sessions on quality control activities.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree

  • 3-5 years of related engineering experience

  • Prior experience leading quality and process improvement initiatives

  • Prior experience working in a manufacturing environment

  • Experience with Lean
