The Student Nurse performs specific non-licensed or non-professional duties of patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. The Student Nurse effectively interacts with patients, significant others, and other health care team members while delivering care to an assigned group of patients under supervision. The Student Nurse adheres in the delivery of care, to Hospital policies and procedure. POSITION SUMMARY:

  • Observes patient's level of responsiveness and monitors vital signs accurately.

  • Completes recognized patient care priorities and delegated care plan assignments thoroughly, accurately, and in a timely manner.

  • Recognizes and reports signs and symptoms of abuse and neglect to physician(s) and Department Director and/or appropriate agency.

  • Participates in rounding and proactively responds to patient needs to improve patient outcomes and positively impact overall patient experience.

  • Contributes to a culture of patient centered care by ensuring a quiet healing environment.

  • Communicates and interacts with patients, families and others in a caring, empathetic, courteous, and respectful manner.

  • Within scope of practice, communicates clearly and provides explanation of care in a way than can be easily understood by patients and their families. Ensures patient's family is informed of patient status as appropriate.

  • Communicates effectively and works with physicians and/or other members of the interdisciplinary team in meeting patient needs.

  • Within scope of practice, participates in the discharge planning process for all assigned patients.

  • Helps manage pain through communication with patient and RN/Charge RN/LPN. Immediately notifies RN/Charge RN/LPN if patient expresses or appears in pain.

  • Actively contributes to and works toward hospital wide improvement in meeting core measures, patient safety and service excellence goals.

  • Continuously evaluates work process and design; understands role in ensuring quality/performance improvement, productivity, and service delivery to meet stakeholder needs.

  • Performs duties in accordance with departmental policies and procedures, and recognized professional, quality, patient safety, environmental and infection control standard.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the occurrence reporting system. Uses system to report potential patient safety issues.


  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required.

  • Completion of freshman curriculum and freshman nursing skills in an ADN or BSN program (or comparable curriculum) required.

  • Current BLS for Healthcare Providers from the American Heart Association

  • Lifting 50lbs maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25lbs.

  • Critical thinking skills

  • Good interpersonal communication and service excellence skills

  • Ability to read/comprehend written instructions

  • Ability to follow verbal instructions

  • PC Skills
