Position Summary:

We are searching for a Bioprocess Applications Scientist that will drive product and process innovation through adaption of existing technology within R&D. This role will work directly with Thermo Fisher staff and customers to support process development, and commercialization of bio-manufacturing techniques used to create biologic drug therapies.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as in-house technical expert in the field of applied biotechnology and process development using single use technologies (primarily supporting SUB, SUM, SUF products).

  • Providing technical leadership in the areas of material/product selection, process characterization, process optimization and product stability under various process or storage conditions.

  • Collaborate directly with customers, field application specialist and sales teams to customize products, develop test plans, execute experiments, write reports and interpret results

  • Leads and supports customer driven projects through - technology transfer, process development, and manufacturing procedures. Lead in process feasibility, characterization, process automation, qualification, and validation type studies as needed.

  • Document experimental results/concepts to support customer facing technical content and intellectual property portfolio; compile findings into customer project specific reports or external documents ready for publication in academic, industry, or trade journals

  • Present at technical conferences and represent the company as a thought leader in industry.

  • Leads projects of moderate scope (cross functional or involve multiple teams)

  • Act as an advisor/coach to mentor other team members

  • Travel as required to perform job functions.    

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's of Science Degree in related field – chemistry, biochemistry, physics, material science, biotechnology or bio/chemical engineering.

  • Advanced degree and/or +8 yrs experience

  • Laboratory research or process development experience.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to learn quickly, work independently and in groups

  • Position may include travel up to 15%

Following skills desired:

  • Knowledge of bioprocessing operations (suspension cell culture, adherent cell culture, harvest & recovery) and cGMP (Current Good Manufacturing Practices) type environments.

  • Experience specifying, designing, and qualifying small and large scale bioprocess unit operations (preference given to candidates with prior experience with cell culture expansion)

  • Strong knowledge of cell biology and/or biochemistry, especially with respect to interaction with biopharmaceutical processes and process equipment

  • Experience in the medical device or biopharmaceutical industries.

  • Software proficiency: MS office programs, DeltaV, SAS/JMP, DoE, Matlab/simulink, Visio

  • Proficient in scientific method/analysis and applied mathematics/statistics.

  • Team oriented with excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Project management skills, time management discipline, Gantt charting

  • Experience directing technicians and small groups for efficient resource utilization
