Job Description:

You will specifically seek to add value by exercising embedded commercial and logistical deal options and by a pro-active approach to problem solving. Key elements of the operator role include:

  • Ensure that all obligations arising from the contract/charter party are carried out and seek to add value by exercising embedded commercial and logistical deal options by using a pro-active approach to problem solving.

  • Highlight any contract optimisation opportunities, thinking on your feet to deal with contractual problems (e.g. off spec cargoes, vessel delays, etc) and ensuring that these are managed professionally and optimally for the trading business.

  • Deal with oil and freight counterparties, terminals, vessels, agents and inspectors on a regular basis regarding all post-deal activities ensuring operations are expedited and all necessary operational information is communicated in good time and documentary requirements are met.

  • Make oil and vessel nominations, prepare and send voyage orders and monitor progress of vessels. Appoint independent inspectors, expeditors and ships agents.

  • Understand the potential commercial impact of cargo/demurrage claims and ensure that the necessary commercial actions are taken to protect Shell's business position both during and after the physical activity.

  • Liaise with Finance Operations to ensure that deals are correctly and timely settled.

About our trading operation team:

This role is specifically to provide Commercial Operations support to the Specialities trading desk. It is a fast moving and changing environment and Operators will work alongside a diverse, multi-cultured group of people. The work is varied and requires that individuals develop a thorough understanding of many aspects of the shipping and oil trading business which forms a good foundation for a career in operations, chartering, supply or oil trading.

Incumbent will be working on the Specialities desk, but will be part of the Products Commercial Operations team, and will be expected to learn the other roles within the team in order to provide flexibility.

  • The successful candidate will ideally be knowledgeable of the Oil and Freight operations.

  • Knowledge of the Trading environment, logical IT systems and processes, with evidence of a strong track record of performance in a scheduling/operations team.

Operators often have to be able to respond quickly and accurately to challenging and sometimes conflicting deadlines in order to comply with business needs and policy guidelines. Daily working hours may be variable and unpredictable at times including regular out-of-hours contact.

  • A competent operator should be a good communicator, well organized with commercial awareness and team skills; to be pro-active in showing initiative and have or gain knowledge of all parts of the trading business
