The selected candidate will join AECOM’s Design, Planning & Economics practice in the Los Angeles, California office. The candidate shall have a strong design portfolio focused on the urban design of the physical realm; excellent graphic, verbal, and written communication skills; and experience working in a collaborative multi-office, multi-disciplinary team environment. The candidate must have a strong interest in developing high quality and innovative urban design, planning, master planning, and sustainability documents and programs, such as master plans, specific plans, community plans, streetscape, design guidelines, feasibility studies, transit-oriented development studies, etc. Additionally, substantial experience and interest working internationally and collaborating with our Chinese offices in a fast-paced environment is highly desired.

The ideal candidate will be a strong advocate for the role of design in place making, the creation of unique mixed-use, pedestrian- and transit-oriented developments. The ideal candidate is someone who is able to perform tasks independently, under supervision of a senior director or project manager, and in a fast-paced collaborative environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepares materials (graphics and written) in support of planning and design for a range of project scales, programs, and scopes, including master plans, specific plans, community plans, streetscape, design guidelines, regulatory updates, feasibility studies, transit-oriented development studies, etc.

  • Able to advance complex concepts in 2 and 3-dimensions, including visioning, site planning, performing building and site capacity studies for a range of use types and building types, and preparing interim and final deliverables.

  • Develop high quality, graphic page layouts, books, boards, and report deliverables in InDesign.

  • Works efficiently on 2 to 5 projects at a time under the supervision of a senior director or project manager; and is able to prioritize multiple tasks needed to meet deadlines.

  • Performs field visits, photo surveys, analyses and documentation of existing conditions.

  • Manages a variety of project tasks ensuring deadlines are met, including project research, base mapping, analysis, interdisciplinary coordination, meeting coordination, public outreach, and the preparation of conceptual design alternatives (in plan, section, and 3D sketches and renderings),

  • Provides additional support as needed to ensure smooth execution of projects and continuity of excellent client relationships.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor of Architecture required

  • 8+ years' experience

  • Working knowledge (or better) of the following is required:

  • Highly skilled in 3D modeling and rendering, including SketchUp. Rhino, and 3d Studio Max a plus.

  • Strong design and graphics abilities, including hand concept sketching and the creation of both digital and hand drawn graphics, maps, illustrations

  • Excellent working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite

  • AutoCAD 2010 or later versions

  • Working knowledge of PowerPoint, and Prezi or other presentation tools

  • The following skills are required:

  • Ability to understand and synthesize the physical impacts of planning and policy decisions on building design, the design of the public realm, and the environment, as well as the ability to convey concepts and issues accurately and convincingly in graphic format.

  • Strong attention to detail and quality.

  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to work in a dynamic deadline-driven environment.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Self-motivated, proactive, and committed to the time, effort, and open-minded perspective that professional growth requires.

  • Ability to work both independently and in a collaborative, dynamic team environment across multiple offices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master of Architecture in Urban Design (MAUD), or similar, is preferred.

  • Experience in sustainability/resiliency documentation and policy.

  • 12 years of experience in the field of urban design is preferred.

  • Experience working internationally, including in Europe and China.
