Job Summary

AECOM is actively seeking a highly talented Vice President, Assistant General Counsel, for immediate employment in one of our Greater Toronto Area (GTA) offices. This role reports to the Senior Vice President and General Counsel for AECOM’s Design and Consulting Services Group.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, those listed below:

  • Lead a team of attorneys, contracts management and support staff, and function in an efficient and budget-conscious manner.

  • Work closely with AECOM’s operations personnel in a general legal advisory capacity, as well as with his/her colleagues within AECOM’s Legal Group and other support services departments.

  • Provide legal support to and collaborate with the Region Executive and Business Unit Leaders.

  • Actively manage a diverse portfolio of business agreements and contracts, including the delivery of varied technical and professional legal activities including providing counsel regarding collateral matters arising in connection with business transactions.

  • Participate and/or lead negotiations between the company and its clients.

  • Advise and collaborate on strategies for potential claims, litigation, arbitration and disputes.

  • Manage and coordinate outside counsel, including managing budgets and legal spend.

  • Work with outside counsel on early case assessments and claims avoidance strategies, formulate litigation approaches, and negotiate and support resolution of claims.

  • Coordinate with in-house litigation team members to improve dispute management and recoveries.

  • Participate in AECOM’s Risk Committee review process.

Minimum Requirements

  • J.D. from an accredited law school.

  • 15+ years of legal experience in the following areas: complex contract review and negotiation, including contracts for construction, engineering and other professional services, as well as government contracts at the federal, provincial and municipal levels.

  • Background working within a global, publicly traded company, preferably in the A/E/C industry.

  • Required activities to fulfill role of Corporate Secretary for Canada, including responsibility for corporate governance issues.

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, the proven ability to work in a team-driven, business-centered environment and the innate intellectual curiosity to transcend their work beyond a specific niche and learn and expand into new areas of law as part of a dynamic and rapidly growing organization.

  • Proven track record in partnering with clients to achieve results that make business sense, including identifying opportunities for cost-effective process improvements and the assessment of risk.

  • Advanced analytical, technical and problem solving skills and abilities, strong attention to detail, and the ability to operate within defined timeframes.

  • Must be a team player.

  • Proven experience in managing outside counsel in a cost-effective manner.

  • Proven experience interacting with insurance carriers to achieve positive outcomes on claims and coverage issues.

  • Demonstrated track record of increasing leadership responsibilities.

  • Proficiency in handling complex legal matters, including rigorous analytical problem solving skills.

  • Ability to build and manage teams and oversee workflows.

  • Ability to consider legal issues from a business perspective and offer sound business advice.

  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and juggle multiple assignments simultaneously.

  • Autonomy, initiative and resourcefulness are valued qualities.

  • Leader who is results-oriented and builds partnerships across functional expertise.

  • Admitted to practice law in any Canadian province and applicable territories.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Global business transactions experience within the construction, design and engineering fields.

  • Exposure to global mega-projects and high stakes disputes.

  • Experience in the role of Corporate Secretary.

  • Candidate must be available for occasional travel.

  • Bilingual (French) preferred.
