Job Description

Quality Control supports refinery operations through diverse and growing chemistry disciplines including Environmental, Production Support, Corrosion Control, Product Release (into increasingly varied markets), and Regulatory Compliance.

The successful candidate will collaborate with all parts of the refinery (Operations, Economics & Scheduling, Logistics, Engineering groups, Health & Safety, Environmental, and Control Systems). Varying degrees of experience in multiple areas are desired as well as a demonstrated willingness to diversify fields of expertise.

Position Description- Purpose

Process Chemists are responsible for using their refining, analytical, and business knowledge to ensure that only fit-for-purpose products are released from the refinery, understanding and assuring environmental and regulatory compliance, and to help solve process-related refining problems that can threaten product quality, safety, the environment, or refinery profitability.

The refinery environment demands a focus on safety, the ability to prioritize many work responsibilities, and effectively manage time while collaborating with a very diverse workforce. Success requires:

  1. Developing an understanding refining processes at a molecular-level

  2. Developing knowledge of business and product customer requirements

  3. Integral understanding of the analytical methods, instrumentation, and sampling techniques used to support both routine and non-routine analysis.

  4. Ability to provide hands-on support to paraprofessional staff for instrumentation, method development, and non-routine testing.

  5. Strong problem solving skills.

  6. Effective communication with people outside of the Shell system, including regulators, trade groups, and technical forums.

  7. The ability to formulate experimental programs/test runs with due attention to safety

  8. The ability to effectively influence people outside of the line authority

  9. Effective oral and written communication skills.

  10. Developing a “Big-Picture” view of how analytical services support refinery profitability.

  11. Ability to read and interpret regulatory documents.

Projects frequently require either leading or working as part of a project team consisting of technical experts from inside and outside of Martinez

Position Accountabilities

The specific accountabilities for this position are:

  1. Leadership in the oversight of specific areas of product, process, or environmental support.

  2. Leadership in continuous improvement of laboratory safety & performance

  3. Interface/Liaison with contract hydrocarbon and environmental labs, including auditing functions

  4. Expert knowledge in Gas Chromatography

  5. Intimate understanding and oversight of analytical test methods (e.g., gas chromatography, titrations, elemental analysis, physical properties, and Statistical Quality Control) as well as developing an intimate knowledge of refinery operations

  6. Technical support to the physical testing, chromatography, environmental, and bioassay laboratories.

  7. Technical support to operations for process chemistry, including test run support and non-routine problem solving,

  8. Seeking out, evaluating, and implementing improvements in testing techniques and analytical technology,

  9. Technical support, training, and mentoring for laboratory technicians and technical associates,

  10. Provide back-up role to other Process Chemists

  11. Help develop and implement standardized work processes and management systems to achieve high standards of compliance with corporate and regulatory requirements

  12. Ad-hoc member of the Refining Chemistry technical networks.

  13. Contributor to the department safety program

  14. Coordination of new chemical additives applications

  15. Off-hour support required

Position Dimensions

Because the refinery is a 24/7 operation, the Process Chemist will be required to periodically provide off-hours support and participate in an off-hours duty rotation.

Position Special Challenges

Refineries are a dynamic environment and require the ability to manage both a fast pace and constantly changing priorities.


  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.

  • Bachelor’s Degree.

  • Minimum three (3) years process support and/or product release experience preferably in a refinery/chemical/manufacturing plant.

  • Expert knowledge in GC.

  • Demonstrated ownership for process chemistry support efforts, including test runs, non-routine testing, and delivering results.

  • Demonstrated evidence of the four Leadership Attributes and Enterprise first values/behaviors will be taken into account during the selection process.
