American Water Divisional Compliance Manager in Merrick, New York

More than 600 people from each of the four existing buildings will move in a phased approach beginning in early October and continuing through November. Primary Role

The Divisional Compliance Manager is responsible for the day-to-day implementation and performance of American Water’s Compliance and Ethics Program (CEP) within the New York American Water Company (NYAWC) and to ensure that all compliance activities are aligned with the enterprise- wide CEP, while allowing for any regulatory requirements unique to NYAWC. The Divisional Compliance Manager will ensure compliance with applicable federal and state laws and regulations that create regulatory risks for the Company, its directors, officers and employees. The program will follow the United States Sentencing Guidelines (USSG) - § 8B2.1. (Effective Compliance and Ethics Program), other applicable regulatory requirements and industry best practices

Key Accountabilities

  • Coordinates continuously with the Compliance and Ethics Manager to ensure compliance with federal and state laws and regulations, and maintaining activities under the core elements of the CEP, including Monitoring and Auditing, Education and Awareness, Risk Mitigation and Management and Continuous Improvement.

  • Supports the design, development, and implementation of strategies and tactics focused on ensuring that the Company remains in compliance with state and federal requirements and the continual effectiveness of the NYAWCEP, including but not limited to maintaining a "dashboard" of compliance information and activities for dissemination to the VP, Chief Compliance Officer and senior management to measure the progress and status of the CEP at NYAWC.

  • Creates and maintains a monitoring and auditing program intended to help ensure the proper completion of those activities required for NYAWC to remain compliant in areas such as Environmental, Operations, Rates and Regulatory, Finance and Purchasing, by leveraging relationships with the local internal Subject Matter Expert’s (SME’s) and external partners responsible for compliance activities, and coordinating or performing various monitoring reviews and analyses of the information and data generated from such activities. 60%

  • Ensures the company has a strong values based culture and maintains a proper climate that drives ethical behavior by coordinating and disseminating ethics and compliance training and communications generated by the CEP. 15%

  • Provides compliance support in the structure and timing of compliance activities and assists in responding to formal and informal inquiries and investigations received from outside regulatory, auditing or investigative agencies. 10%

  • Tracks, analyzes and interprets changes to laws and regulations that impact NYAWC operations both independently and in coordination with other subject matter experts, such as Legal, Rates and Regulatory and Environmental. 10%

  • Maintains the CEP manual and standard operating procedures. 5%

  • Demonstrated experience working with senior leaders as well as external auditors and/or regulators.
