Job Summary

AECOM is actively seeking a creative, highly talented Waste Characterization Specialist III or IV for immediate employment in either the Freeport, TX or Midland, MI office. The Waste Characterization Specialist will contribute to a technically diverse team that provides on-site consultative support at client facilities. The successful candidate must be able to quickly learn the client’s internal processes for waste management and initially works under a peer review process to evaluate performance on assigned tasks.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provides technical guidance related to RCRA (40CFR), Waste characterization and Waste regulation in response to client requests.

  • Provides technical guidance related to state waste regulations for various client sites in Texas, Michigan, Louisiana and other states in the US.

  • Evaluates and responds to client phone calls, e-mail and inquiries about RCRA regulations, Waste Management, Waste Characterization, Waste, State Waste Regulations, MDEQ, TCEQ, RCRA, Lab Packs, analytical requirements, type of waste containers recommended, options for waste disposals sites, etc.

  • Confers with the client to obtain accurate and complete information to properly characterize waste

  • Enters data into client-based software which is used to manage waste characterization data

  • Actively participates in maintaining a safe work environment and supporting a culture of safety as evidenced in approach to daily activities and projects

  • Ability to communicate verbally and in written form to impart technical information and interact with clients and regulatory personnel.

  • Effective verbal communications skills to impart technical information in response to client requests

  • Effective time management and analytical skills.

  • Proven ability to work in a team environment under a peer review process to ensure quality of work product.

  • Self-starter and motivated in producing high-quality results for clients

  • Quick learner and able to grasp scientific concepts and apply them to different technical challenges

Minimum Requirements

Waste Characterization Specialist III:

  • High School diploma or demonstrated equivalent

  • 5 years’ of related technician experience in a petrochemical environment or demonstrated equivalent combination of education, skills, knowledge, abilities and experience.

  • Advanced working knowledgeable of state and federal environmental regulatory framework and processes, specifically Waste Characterization and Waste Regulation (RCRA).

Waste Characterization Specialist IV:

  • High School diploma or demonstrated equivalent

  • 8 years’ of related technician experience in a petrochemical environment or demonstrated equivalent combination of education, skills, knowledge, abilities and experience.

  • Advanced working knowledgeable of state and federal environmental regulatory framework and processes, specifically Waste Characterization and Waste Regulation (RCRA).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree or higher level education preferred

  • Experience applying knowledge of chemistry and algebraic concepts to facilitate problem-solving

  • Current 40 Hour HAZWOPER

  • RCRA Management of Hazardous Waste Training

  • DOT Hazmat Ground Shipping

  • Knowledge of TCEQ waste regulations for Industrial Waste for Texas.

  • Knowledge of MDEQ waste regulations for waste in Michigan.
