Primary Role

The Senior Planning Engineer is a team lead providing technical expertise and project management supervision. This position is responsible for evaluating water and wastewater systems and recommending system upgrades. Engineering evaluations typically include assessing water quality and treatment plant performance, energy and resource utilization, and the condition of pumping facilities, tanks, instrumentation and controls, and pipelines. Our engineering planning staff reports to the Corporate Engineering Director - Planning or a State Engineering Lead.

Key Accountabilities

  • Represent American Water as subject matter expert on national industry and regulatory forums and in pursuing business development opportunities.

  • Coordinate and prepare strategic water and wastewater system studies including Master Plans and specialty studies.

  • Assess system capacity, asset condition, facility performance, resiliency level and operational efficiency, and recommend associated improvements.

  • Provide input to strategic capital investment plans and asset management plans.

  • Serve as a senior technical resource for water treatment and water resource assessments, safe yield analysis, hydraulic and pumping evaluations, risk assessments and other pertinent subjects as needed to support operational and business needs.

  • Support engineering forensic and root cause analyses.

  • Present results within and outside of the company.

  • Pursue professional development to enhance performance and contribute to the organization.

Knowledge / Skills

  • Ability to assess new technology and current trends in water quality and treatment.

  • Demonstrated competency in water/wastewater system evaluations or equivalent water/wastewater system design experience.

  • Working knowledge of Safe Drinking Water Act and Clean Water Act regulations.

  • Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with clients, both internal and external, as well as representatives of local, state and federal regulatory agencies.

Experience / Education

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in water resources planning and/or conceptual design.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Urban Planning or related field required.


Travel Requirements

  • Up to 20% travel required.

  • 80% primarily in the office with occasional work in the field at water/wastewater facilities to conduct site investigations and hold on-site project kick-off and review meetings.

  • Professional Engineering (PE) license preferred.

  • Project Management Certification, advanced Engineering degree or MBA a plus.

  • GIS and hydraulic modeling experience a plus.

  • AICP Certified Environmental Planner (AICP CEP) considered.
