Purchasing Area Leader
Monsanto is seeking a highly motivated individual to join the Muscatine, Iowa plant as a Purchasing Area Leader. The plant is located south of Muscatine along the Mississippi River and manufactures a wide variety of crop protection products, including Roundup®, the world's best-selling herbicide. The Purchasing Area Lead reports to the Business Unit Lead and is a member of the Site Leadership Team. The Area Lead is responsible for leading the procurement and storeroom activities in the plant; ensuring the business needs are met in a safe, cost effective, responsible, reliable and efficient manner. They are responsible for understanding the gains derived from implementing best in class techniques, and achieving results through innovation, staff empowerment, process improvement, coordination of work, and regional collaboration.
Scope / Specific Responsibilities of the Position:
Drive delivery of area objectives, operational improvements, metrics tracking, and adoption of best practices leveraging team members and peers including the following:
Ensure adherence to the Monsanto Controller’s Policy as well as Muscatine Specific controls for all spending generated by Muscatine plant requisitioners.
Direct control and management of all non-raw material spend.
Ensure self, team and supplier adherence to robust Environmental Safety & Health (ESH) & Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) programs.
Work proactively with internal customers, suppliers and contract management ensuring business deliverables are met.
Facilitate cross-site and corporate communication, leveraging and implementing best practices.
Optimize people performance and development through mentoring, coaching, training, recognition, and developmental opportunities. Responsible for creating progression plans, appraisals/reviews, discipline, and documentation.
Champion lean maturity progression and deliver on performance improvement targets at the area level.
Sponsor Daily Operations Reviews (DOR) in Area, conduct Leader Standard Work practices, and compute progress against metrics by collecting actionable data from line-level visual boards.
The Muscatine Purchasing Manager supports and drives continuous feedback to suppliers to ensure adherence to contracts, resolve disagreements, and ensure customer expectations are met. He/she is also responsible for ensuring contracts are in place with suppliers to provide adequate scopes of work, Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) expectations, and maintain Monsanto’s business interests.
Focus on identification and development of diversity suppliers for new business opportunities/bids of existing services.
Manage land leases for plant leveraging best practices.
Engage in community involvement to cultivate trust and promote a positive image of the plant.
Bachelor’s Degree Required (Purchasing or Supply Chain Management preferred)
Required Minimum Experience:
5+ years of purchasing experience
Prior people leadership experience including coaching, influencing, conflict resolution, team/individual goal setting, and effective performance management
Independent self-starter, highly organized, able to manage multiple priorities
Lean management practices
Strong skills in communication, time, task, and project management, priority setting, decision making, resource allocation, budgeting and cost management
Ability to manage projects and lead cross-functional work teams to achieve desired results.
Strong analytical skills and quantitative orientation to promote decisions that represent value to the organization.
Knowledgeable in all aspects of contract negotiation.
Proficient in SAP, Business Warehouse, MS Excel, MS Word, and MS PowerPoint
Strong understanding of manufacturing organizations and customer requirements
Strong understanding of warehouse management best practices
One year of leadership and management experience in a manufacturing or agricultural environment
At least 3+years of experience with purchasing in a manufacturing or engineering environment
Experience working and leading in a matrixed production structure
Working knowledge of Lean improvement principles such as 5S, Focused Improvement, Visual Management, Gemba Walk and Teamwork to drive continuous improvement and sustainable change
Understanding of chemical processes in a chemical manufacturing environment

Specific Work Conditions and Physical Requirements:
Position is in a manufacturing office environment combined with plant process management activities working around chemical manufacturing. This position requires the ability to use a computer and keyboard for extended periods of time and the ability to work a full eight-hour day within the flexible schedule of 6:00am to 5:30 pm. Limited travel and after-hours support of critical needs is expected.
