The Cell Processing Laboratory (CPL) Technologist is responsible for performing and documenting all tasks and duties associated with the processing and cryopreservation of cellular therapy products used to provide hematopoietic support to patients undergoing high dose chemotherapy. S/he provides appropriate patient care or support related to the infusion of cellular therapy products. The CPL Technologist demonstrates an ability to independently conduct a variety of routine and non-routine clinical laboratory analyses, operate clinical laboratory equipment, make subtle discriminations and accurately interpret record and verify test results.
General Essential Functions 1. Demonstrates knowledge of human growth and development, assessment, range of treatment, and care of patients appropriate to the ages of patients being served. 2. Ensures appropriate 24/7 staff coverage in the Cell Processing Lab (CPL) including participation in emergency/weekend/late/on call/call back coverage rotation. Responds promptly and appropriate to storage freezer alarms. 3. Establishes protocols and develops mechanisms to validate all procedures, instrumentation and reagents for accuracy, precision, sensitivity, and clinical and cost effectiveness. Evaluates new and/or modified procedures, reagents and instruments for reliability and validity as needed. Troubleshoots all instruments as needed. 4. Performs phlebotomy as needed on patients. 5. Specimen processing, assuring specimens are reviewed before analysis, have proper identification and meet criteria for testing. 6. Performs various types of laboratory test(s) on patient specimens and hematopoietic progenitor cells, evaluates test results, and report/enter/verify test results in Laboratory Information System. 7. Establishes and maintains a quality control and assurance plan for all appropriate processes in the CPL. Performs and evaluates periodically quality control measures per policy and procedure. Adheres to all quality assurance standards and procedures. Participates in LEAN projects as appropriate. 8. Demonstrates knowledge of, and ensures compliance with all applicable regulatory agency requirements including but not limited to CLIA, CAP, FDA, FACT, AABB, TJC, and CMS. 9. Maintains CPL procedure manuals, develops new or revises existing policies and procedures as needed to meet CMC, FACT and other regulatory requirements. Manages CPL SOP database/logs. 10. Identifies, monitors, tracks and reports adverse events and deviations from CPL standards/procedures. 11. Performs and documents annual competency validation and continuing education of CPL personnel. 12. Communicates laboratory test knowledge and test results in a professional and appropriate manner. 13. Manages and performs technical and delegated administrative operations of the Cell Processing Lab. 14. Responsible for new employee orientation and training in the Cell Processing Lab. 15. Provides tours, education and technical demonstrations related to functions and procedures performed in the CPL on an as needed basis. 16. Participates in hospital initiatives and in department goals set by Director(s), Manager and SCCBC Program. Assist in identifying annual CPL capital and non-capital equipment needs. 17. Demonstrates professional and independent judgment. Fosters an environment of cooperation and collaboration between the CPL and other internal and external depts./agencies.
Qualifications 1. Demonstrated experience (2 years) in cell processing or medical technology 2. Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology required, Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Laboratory Technology or related field preferred 3. State of TN Medical Technologist license. 4. Clinical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist (ASCP or AMT) certification 5. State Laboratory Supervisor license preferred. 6. Interpersonal skills to successfully interact with all staff, patients, patient families and vendors. 7. Good computer skills.
