Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities:

Strategic Project initiation and management: Depending on the nature of the project, this will require either regular input by the UW Director or oversight management of projects or both. Projects range from ongoing items such as statistical updates to new methods which may involve topics unknown at present or projects dealing with PCL aspirations and vision.


Underwrite and assess risk for Bond and Specialty Insurance and accounts in a Business Unit. Make appropriate decisions within own underwriting authority and make appropriate recommendations to referral Underwriter. A primary focus at present will be Cyber Liability and complex D&O and Special Underwriting Risk Facility (SURF facility).

Within authority , make timely and prudent decisions consistent with Bond and Specialty Insurance Business Unit requirements and standards and within submission timeframe.

Accountable for all aspects of the execution of Business Unit strategies to produce budgeted results. May participate or lead a team on the development of strategies.

Portfolio Management - Takes actions necessary to ensure that the portfolio of business is consistent with the strategies and profitability measures for the Business Unit.

Act as a role model for accurate underwriting documentation/information in account management systems and adherence to documentation standards.

Develop processes to ensure accurate documentation exists for all accounts in the portfolio of business. Monitors and takes the necessary action to resolve documentation deficiencies with Hub management.

Shares industry/subject expertise with employees and represents Travelers at the local level. Participates on or leads projects in area of expertise with understanding and consideration for national implications.

As the referral Underwriter, assure that policies and accounts are effectively underwritten, handled and documented in compliance with Business Unit and regulatory standards and requirements.

Sales Management:

Proactively work with the Field to analyze sales plan against knowledge of the territory.

Make recommendations to enhance sales and visibility in the marketplace.

Works with Field to develop action plans to address specific programs or accounts where opportunities exist.

Partner with the Field Office on sensitive account specific communication and participate in the communication to producers if necessary, especially in the areas of Cyber Liability and complex D&O (SURF).

Support and encourage cross sell opportunities within Bond and Specialty Insurance and Travelers.

Producer and account interaction focuses on meeting customer expectations regarding response time and knowledge of products and business.

Work with Business Intelligence and Analytics and Business Insurance regarding tools and resources necessary to evaluate and manage the portfolio.

Analyze Claim, actuarial, finance, compliance and policy data to understand portfolio dynamics and book performance.

Job Summary:

The PCL Underwriting Director will use data analysis, analytics skills, and underwriting experience to drive PCL strategy across our business segments. The UW Director will work with business unit leadership, business partners including Claim, Actuarial and Field Staff to assist in the development, measurement and execution of market strategies while supporting field offices in achieving budgeted financial results (premium, loss ratio, retention, commissions, pricing, and new business). This role combines a mix of strategic project work, product leadership duties and relationship management with internal Business Units outside of PCL such as the Cyber National Practice as well as partners outside of Travelers including financial services vendors,facultative reinsurance providers, etc. The position will also entail ongoing duties the PCL Business Unit conducts such as being a team member with internal PCL auditing, training and onboarding of new hires working with our financial services systems provided by vendors. Primarily, this job is focused on strategic work with some complex underwriting involved as a smaller portion of duties.

Minimum of 7 years of experience with underwriting usage of data and analytics, preferably at Travelers
