Job Family Summary

The Underwriting Research & Analytics Team is responsible for monitoring and ensuring the quality of the book of business through collaboration with internal and external business partners to leverage analytics and predictive models in developing Countrywide Underwriting standards and influencing business results.

Job Summary

The Underwriting Research & Analytics Manager is responsible for directing the evaluation efforts of current Underwriting analytical procedures and processes, and will recommend process improvements. The Manager will lead the allocation of resources depending on projects, as well as serve as the project lead. This role will oversee the interactions across AORs ensuring alignment and maintenance of Underwriting analytics and predictive models.

Key Responsibilities

Research and Analysis

  • Collaborates with other AORs to improve the effectiveness of business decisions using data, analytics and predictive modeling

  • Applies and leads economic, quantitative and statistical analytics to make sound business decisions that contribute to market share growth and profitability

  • Executes Underwriting strategies to achieve business unit plan objectives

  • Proactively researches and interprets demographic, economic and competitor data to identify markets/ segments for opportunities to impact growth and profit

  • Directs and evaluates trend analysis (e.g., competitor analysis, risk management, financial) to forecast results and recommends changes based on findings

  • Proactively determines appropriate analyses to be conducted for projects to provide insights and business recommendations to achieve corporate goals (agency/customer trends, loss results, distribution analysis, etc.); can make final decisions

  • Forecasts and makes Underwriting recommendations to solve market specific implications of business strategies

  • Reviews and provides peer feedback on analytical methods and tools developed by others in the department

  • Plans and coordinates the integration and delivery of predictive models into the Underwriting process

  • Directs the allocation of resources on the team depending on the scope of the project

  • Functions as a liaison between business unit and systems or other areas of responsibility

  • Advanced knowledge in the use of data sources and applications to conduct research and partner with other AORs to develop needed data and analysis techniques (OLAP/DART, CDF, ADW, R, SQL, etc)

Process and Product Design/Improvement

  • Directs the development/design of new analytical processes that are of high complexity

  • Functions as the subject matter expert in the development and design of new analytical tools and predictive models in the underwriting space

  • Creates underwriting analytics and predictive model concept designs, addresses feasibility (cost benefit analysis - financial, operational, and technical), and develops requirements and measurement

  • Forecasts short-term and long-term deliverables and integrates approaches across other AORs

  • Develops communication strategies and materials to support new underwriting analytical tools and predictive models

  • Solicits and integrates input from key internal and external stakeholders

  • Proactively evaluates underwriting analytical tools and procedures and recommends alternatives or improvements

  • Proactively monitors data to ensure business results are aligned with expectations. Actively communicates anomalies and recommended actions to appropriate stakeholders

  • Communicates and presents project information to project team as well as providing presentation/updates to senior level management

  • Determines and enrolls resources/expertise that are necessary to successfully complete projects/ assignments from various AORs

  • Provides feedback on project team member(s) that contributes to performance management

  • Actively builds strong relationships among teams and team members to ensure cooperation on project objectives and underwriting predictive model maintenance

  • Evaluates lessons learned and shares experiences with peers/leadership for process change/improvement

  • Serves as a subject matter expert and consults with other AORs on complex issues within their discipline(s)

Job Qualifications

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Experience

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

  • Experience: 7+ years industry experience preferred

  • Advanced underwriting, product management and general insurance knowledge

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with the ability to influence others

  • Strong people and thought leadership; Ability to develop, mentor and coach others

  • Advanced analytical and problem solving skills

  • Demonstrates and fosters a sense of urgency, strong commitment and accountability for achieving results

  • Proven ability to effectively network and communicate with different types and levels of staff, both written and verbal
