Job Summary:

The Manager of Business Insights leads a team of analysts that works across all customer groups and is focused on developing business insights, providing actionable reporting, and turning data into information – so we can enhance value, get closer to our customers and elevate McKesson as a provider of meaningful and differentiating business insights.

The Manager of Business Insights is the data steward leading a shared service for both the retail and institutional teams of the pharmaceutical distribution business unit and is responsible for:

  • Proactively understanding and tracking key market trends to assess impact on our business.

  • Aggregating various data sources to validate, integrate, standardize and implement key scorecard measurements.

  • Leading and developing the annual analytical reporting calendar and gaining stakeholder alignment on key metrics and deliverables.

  • Leveraging Corporate BI to advance strategic thinking and understanding across the organization.

  • Collaborating with customer business teams to align on reporting needs, tools and solutions with core focus on adding value and providing actionable insights.

  • Partnering with external agencies to identify and assess new value added and business building opportunities.

  • Developing analytical capability and overall competency of the sales/marketing organization and cross-functional partners.

Section A – Specific Responsibilities

Team & People Development

  • Leads a team of analysts that works across all customer groups

  • Provides strategic direction, sets priorities, establishes objectives and provides ongoing coaching and mentoring to foster personal development

  • Ensures team awareness and value is developed and known across the organization

  • Leverages capabilities of internal data analytics teams to enable optimal performance of Business Insights and generate cross-functional value for the enterprise

Data Aggregation

  • Owns and coordinates SOPs for standardization of data sources, validation practices and utilization

  • Evaluates current data and reporting tools, challenges and improves current systems

  • Leads the design of new BI solutions and reporting measurements, incorporates multiple data sets in order to automate queries and regular reporting

  • Manages internal and external sources, understands the strengths and limitations of the various data sources

  • Develops and delivers insights/intelligence plan, gains alignment with key stakeholders

  • Investigates problems and inconsistencies with information provided to clients and coordinates correction

Business Intelligence

  • Partners with corporate BI team and preferred external partners on data management, development and score card implementation and works with team to streamline and automate reporting

  • Maintains and executes agreed to standardized / automated data based score cards

  • Partners with business leaders and sales team to define reporting needs

  • Creates and maintains customer specific business review dashboards

  • Interacts with business and customer presenting insights and business intelligence in line with needs

  • Leads and manages the identification, selection and business case preparation for new tools or resources required to continue to advance dashboard, scorecard, report and data usage

  • Collaborates with IT and EDG to streamline processes, clean/align data sets, develop new tools, and facilitate training for Business Insights analysts and select sales leads

Capacity Building

  • Lead strategic planning for Business Insights and ensure cross-functional alignment on deliverables

  • Develops and executes annual organizational data training and capability calendar

  • Develops capacity and capability with direct reports

  • Manages data project priorities and team requirements, coordinates activities with other groups

  • Leads cross functional teams on data driven projects

  • Benchmarks reporting best practices across McKesson and with top tier external peers

  • Establishes processes and solutions that meet ethical and legal obligations when providing information internally and externally and flags breaches when required

Competency Development

  • Is the go to person for all pharma distribution data and BI queries

  • Trains Operations, Marketing, and Sales organizations on relevant data sources

  • Ensures the sustainable transfer of knowledge

  • Builds a culture of continuous improvement by championing well-structured experimentation across teams and external customer touchpoints

  • Builds and strengthens bridges with internal sources of quantitative and qualitative data, such as Government Affairs, Demand Planning, Procurement Operations, Market Intelligence, Specialty Health, Operational Excellence, RBG analytics, etc.

  • Seeks and develops partnerships with corporate MDnA group and external subject matter experts in advanced analytics to augment team capabilities to better enable the National Sales Team

Business Planning

  • Works with internal partners in finance and oversees the creation of the annual sales budgets and operating expenses for all Pharma Distribution and Supply Solutions customers

  • Provides forecasting reporting as required by the business

  • Leads process and data capture for the annual Budget Planning Cycle of the National Sales team

  • Supports supervisor in the creation of the annual budget for Business Insights

Section B – Key Requirements


  • An undergraduate degree in relevant data analytics, marketing or retail sales field

  • 10 years of experience

  • At least 5 years of experience of interacting with senior management on strategic initiatives

  • A strong understanding of the McKesson business ecosystem is a benefit

  • Proven track record of innovative / industry leading analysis practices and continual process improvement to ensure accurate and timely understanding of key business trends

  • Knowledge of the competitive landscape in the community pharmacy space would be an asset

  • Experience in the pharmaceutical industry would be an asset

  • Retail analytics experience would be an asset.

  • Presents regularly to the Leadership Team(s) and larger pharma organization

  • Participates in 3 in a box meetings, other customer meetings

  • Presents on occasion to the McKesson Canada Senior Management Team

  • Presents on occasion to various retail banner member advisory boards

  • Supervises a team of several analysts of various degrees of experience
