Medical Laboratory Technician- Laboratory

HCA Houston ER 24/7 is currently looking for a Medical Laboratory Technician- Laboratory

Responsibilities:

The Medical Lab Technician collects blood, performs test, inputs patient information and test results into computer, performs computer functions as needed and assists in other duties as directed by laboratory supervisor/manager. The Medical Lab Technician is proficient in the following disciplines: Hematology, Chemistry, Immunohematology (Blood Bank), POCT, and microscopic urine.

  1. Accepts responsibility for own actions; offers and accepts constructive criticism in a non – defensive manner.

  2. Adheres to hospital attendance and tardiness policy. Appropriately clocks in/out and returns from break and lunch on time.

  3. Adheres to schedule and provides coverage in assigned areas. Adaptable to changes in work flows.

  4. Adjusts break and lunch times to ensure appropriate department coverage for optimal patient care.

  5. All employees will be held accountable for attending training regarding Code of Conduct annually.

  6. Appropriate use and inventory of reagents and supplies (initial/date all opened reagents).

  7. Assists in maintaining general cleanliness and safety of work area to ensure that work area is clean and free of safety hazards.

  8. Can perform venipuncture and capillary (finger & heel) sticks on infants, children and adults.

  10. Follows protocols for checking and reporting critical values and delta checks per SOP.

  11. Follows SOP for checking and reconciling outstanding tests and draws.

  12. Has no unapproved overtime, excessive tardiness or mis-punch.

  13. Maintains competency in designated technical areas (both automated and manual testing procedures). Assists in Bone Marrow procedure.

  14. Performs and reports tests/procedures per SOP, works effectively under stressful situations.

  15. Performs appropriate volume of workload within specific time frames. Completes work from previous shifts and assists others as available or needed.

  16. Performs tests and reports results during computer downtime per SOP. Uses appropriate downtime procedures.

  17. Performs, trouble-shoots and documents instrument maintenance and malfunctions per SOP.

  18. Performs/reviews and documents QC per SOP.

  19. Print/review/reconcile computer reports as assigned.

  20. Prioritizes test procedures per SOP. Performs STAT tests/procedures in timely manner.

  21. Promotes teamwork, encourages and supports others, respects co-workers and members of management.

  22. Properly identifies patient/specimens using two forms of I.D. (Full Name and Medical Record number, DOB, or Account number) on collection labels to patient's wristband and/or test tube. Properly use of equipment/supplies and collection techniques.

  23. Records equipment temperature checks per SOP.

  24. Successful participation in proficiency and competency testing.

License / Certifications / Requirements

Must possess MLT or equivalent certification, or be currently eligible to sit for MLT or equivalent certification exam. Certification as MLT (ASCP) or equivalent is required within 180 days of hire.

Education: Requires Associates Degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology.

Experience: Prefer one year of experience in one of the Laboratory Sciences.
