Primary Role

Responsible for managing a team of Learning and Development professionals in developing varied training projects and solutions for our American Water workforce. Build relationships with all stakeholders, HR business partners and State leadership to ensure training needs are being met. Create, maintain and implement a needs assessment process that allows the business to plan for future training needs. Ensure learning team members are providing consistent support to the business by providing structure and guidance in terms of our services and our performance consulting approach. Support the learning team members by removing roadblocks, offering feedback and following through on all commitments. Prioritize learning team members’ tasking to ensure the highest priority items are addressed. Identify development areas of learning team members and ensure they are getting the opportunity to develop through on-the-job training, through mentors or through formal training. Collaborate with other Learning and Development colleagues to identify best practices and process improvement opportunities. Ensure consistency across products developed by Learning and Development.

Perform as a member of the state/line of business executive management team by setting strategies, evaluating employees, processes, and technology, and functioning as the liaison with American Water executive management on financial matters.

Key Accountabilities

Track 1:

Manage team in the creation and implementation of effective training programs.

Implement a needs assessment process and follows it through its life cycle.

Develop a retain strategy for all programs to ensure training is being retained by participants to include collecting and reporting on metrics.

Ensure leaders of participants clearly understand their role in development of employees and the retention of content.

Ensure all training programs are reviewed and/or updated on a regular basis to ensure accuracy and effectiveness.

Track 2:

Manage team in the utilization of development tools and LEARN to meet the training needs of American Water.

Develop and maintain guidance documents for rapid development tools.

Develop and maintain guidance documents for content that is intended for LEARN.

Create and manage a team of learning coordinators to help maintain and optimize LEARN.

Ensure LEARN is maintained through reviewing content and archiving where applicable.

Remain attentive to all Success Factors updates and incorporate new features when appropriate.

Remain attentive to changes in technology to include social media and machine learning that could enhance training.

Collaborate on all HR technological system changes to ensure LEARN is considered.

Knowledge / Skills

Adult learning theory and instructional design methodology (ADDIE or 6Ds).

Microsoft office suite of products including PowerPoint, Publisher, Word and Excel as well as Adobe suite of design applications, Office 365,

SharePoint, Captivate, Camtasia, and other e- learning authoring tools.

Knowledge of the water industry operations, preferred

Knowledge of OSHA requirements, preffered

Working knowledge of learning programs and courses in an LMS

Working knowledge of creating, running and distributing standard and custom learning reports in an LMS

Working knowledge of troubleshooting SCORM content

Knowledge of SAP’s Success Factors preferred

Knowledge of mobile operating systems IOS and Android

Minimum 10 years experience in Learning and Development, conducting needs assessments, designing SCORM compliant eLearning and instructorled training, or relevant experience.

Managerial experience preferred.


Bachelor degree in a related field preferred.

Travel Requirements

Up to 50% travel as required.
