Job Summary

TheSheet-metal Aircraft Mechanic IIIwill repair and overhaul the aircraft structure, flight surfaces to return the aircraft to air worthy condition.


Principal Accountabilities* * Replace or repair worn or damaged airframe surfaces. * Inspect parts for wear, cracks, security, or other defects. * Maintain, repair and modify aircraft structures and structural components of moderate difficulty. * Receive technical guidance, as required, from supervisor or higher-level technician. * Remove and replace aircraft related hardware such as button head, countersunk aluminum, steel rivets, hi-loks, hi-shears, hucks, jo-bolts, riv-nuts, grommets and nutplates. * Provide mentorship and guidance to apprentices, sheet-metal mechanics I and sheet-metal mechanics II. * Responsible for ensuring workflow within designated work area. * Responsible for updating supervisor on potential problems, aircraft progress and any updates on issues related to aircraft delivery. * Responsible for moderate to complex composite repairs to aircraft structural panels and flight surfaces. * Perform other duties as assigned. Knowledge & Skills * Basic knowledge of aircraft sheet metal/structural modifications and repair. * Basic knowledge of aircraft unique tools such as test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, sheet metal brakes and sheers. * Ability to identify aircraft structure such as frames, formers, beams, bulkheads, stringers, intercostals, skins, longerons, rotor blades, nacelles, fairings, windscreens, stabilators, gussets, ribs and others. * Basic blueprint reading skills. * Ability to stay informed and stay current of applicable aircraft service bulletins to ensure continued air worthiness. * Able to work with minimal or no supervision. * Working knowledge of technical publications. * Working knowledge of repairs applicable to relevant aircraft operations. * Working knowledge of corrosion control techniques and base, federal and Company procedures for handling and disposal of hazardous waste materials. * Must be able to foster a good team environment within the maintenance facility. Experience & Education * High School degree or equivalent required. * Six (6) or more years of actual and recent experience in the repair, modification, maintenance and overhaul of the type(s) of aircraft being serviced preferred. * Completion of specialized courses in aircraft structural repair preferred. * Must possess and maintain a complete set of sheet metal repair tools in good condition. Physical Requirements/Working Environment * May work in Aircraft maintenance hangar or outside. * May be required to respond to a wide variety of operational circumstances, including extreme weather conditions and rudimentary infrastructure. * May be exposed to extreme noise from turbine and jet engine aircraft. * May be exposed to fumes or airborne particles; may be exposed to electrical shock hazards or work near moving mechanical parts, vehicles, or aircraft. * Must be able to walk and stand on level and/or inclined surfaces for certain periods throughout the day. * Must be able to climb stairs, ramps, ladders, and work stands. * Must be able to crouch, crawl, grasp or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbow/knee and reach above/below shoulders. * May be required to lift up to 50 pounds. * May be required to see aircraft in flight, read dials/gauges, identify small objects and hand tools. * Must be able to communicate by voice and detect sound by ear. * Must be able to distinguish color and judge three-dimensional depth. * May be required to operate power vehicles, machinery, hand tools, ground support equipment, fork lift, APU, etc. * Must be able to pass a respiratory evaluation and wear Personnel Protective Equipment (respirator). Travel * 0-10 percent travel required
